before long i will be in the market for a fixed blade. I'm more partial to folders, but i want a good fixed blade for when i'm hiking, camping etc. would like to stay under $100 but i am up for listening to any suggestions.

Yeah ESEE 6 is a great option, if you want something smaller and easier to carry take a look at the ESEE 4.

Made of 1095 High carbon, 57 HRC refers to it hardness. Properly treated 1095 is good stuff and at 57 the knife will be very tough and easy to sharpen.

Make sure you research the Becker BK16.
I like the Esee 4 as well, but the Becker has great ergos.

BK16, BK2 for something bigger, Buck 119, Kershaw skyline fixed blade, condor bushlore or kephart, you could get by with something as cheap as a mora dependoing on what you plan to do with it.

I love my BHK frontier. The handle is big enough for my hand, the blade large enough for most tasks. Tool steel is easy to sharpen.

The esee is better bang for your buck.

ESEE, Becker, Scrapyard. Can't go wrong, they make good knives. Take your pick.

ESEE-4 - great knife, great sheath, and if the budget will stretch, look into the TKC handles.

I personally was really disappointed with the BK-16 (hated the ergos and the blade shape, but that's just me) but a lot of people love it and I have other Beckers that I would swear by.

Keep an eye on the Exchange here too as good knives can come up with very good prices. Around your $100 mark you could check out a Bark River Bravo or Aurora (I have one and love it), or a Fallkniven F1 or S1.
