Need advice on a knife purchase

Then why not something more "damaging" as the SD knife? I could see getting any one of your choices as the "EDC" and something nastier and SD-dedicated as the other knife...like a CS Counter Point or Tiger Claw, all the Broken Skull may have is size, and, really, I wouldn't trust Nutnfancy's "intimidation effect" theory.

Yeah, umm, I kinda missed the whole tactical-defensive task for the CSBS. Unless you're trained in using a knife in a defensive role, the time spent deploying it would be better spent running away. Seriously. Just getting that out of the way. Probably for an non-professional user the best bladed weapon for self defense would be a Spyderco Matriarch or Civilian. They're made to cause massive damage with less than perfect strokes. You might even look into a baton.

This doesn't change my EDC recommendation, but I think I see where marcinek is going here.

And dump the CS. That's what I would do, honestly.

So, when asked which knife from a list you think he should get to accompany his Broken Skull your recommendation is to ditch the Broken Skull and get a knife that isn't on the list.

So if someone asked what sports car they should get to accompany their SUV would you also ignore that list, tell them to sell the Tahoe and buy a Porsche Cayenne?

It seems to me you fixated on the context of the question rather than the question itself. As if any of these recommendation threads have any real, practical issue. The dude has a list of knives he wants whittled down to one. I'd not call what you did helpful. Just muddied the water.

NOTE: I also think carrying a Broken Skull solely for defensive purposes is silly as it's a better EDC knife than the ones on the list.

Thanks. Like I could see a Matriarch and any of the knives on the list, if I had unlimited pocket space and didn't care about weight (which is what appears, after asking, to be AtH's case). Then you got a dedicated SD knife and the dedicated EDC knife.

But the Broken Skull isn't a dedicated SD knife. Its pretty redundant.

If replacing the Cold Steel, then go with a waved Endura. Bigger blade, just a couple dollars more. Still under $80.

I can't speak to using a knife for defense. I have no experience, knowledge, or interest in that topic.

We have a section here on the forum called "Practical Tactical" where you can discuss the usage of knives as defensive tools with other like-minded individuals.

I do have both a Leek and a Delica. I really like the Delica, though I don't really carry it much because I have other knives I like even better.

I don't really like the Leek that much. I don't care for the assist on that particular model, and it needs grip tape or something on the scales - they are too smooth. If I needed that type of a very pointy semi-wharncliffe blade on a regular basis, I would probably carry it and put some gun-tape on the handles. It's a nicely made knife and I like the steel, just not the overall package.

If their "SUV" was a Toyota Camry I would ask questions to try to get my head around what is going on.

I appreciate the recommendations on a tactical blade, and I'd be happy to look into some of these suggestions, but there's a few reasons that I don't plan on doing so yet. For one, I am not trained in knife fighting (and I don't have the time or money set aside to pursue such) and I agree that fleeing should always be done when possible. There are situations that can occur in the life of a normal person that do not allow fleeing, and I want to be prepared for said circumstance. Second, I know that the CSBS is not the best tactical option, but it's not bad either. The CSBS has a blade that is just as long as the matriarch and civilian, but weighs less, is slimmer, has a stronger lock, and has an adequate blade shape for the said role. The CSBS can also serve as a backup blade to a smaller edc blade, should the occasion arise. Third, I don't have the budget to buy a new tactical carry knife (especially something as expensive as the citizen) in addition to a new edc blade.

Don't get me wrong I agree with what your saying, but I made this thread about a new edc blade for advice about a new edc blade.

Spyderco Delica4 FFG or Dragonfly2 in FRN handles, VG-10 steel. I find the FRN scales to provide a good gripping surface with traction in all directions.
I second the delica 4. It's light, the from has great traction, you can choke up on the blade and the small ditch between the handle and the blade that is left unsharoened actually works as a decent choil and isn't too uncomfortable. The tip is great, vg10 is a good steel.

I'm just confused why you need to wave mod it. I see the wave feature more for a knife you need to open quickly which would only be for tactical purposes. But it's easy enough to open one handed.

The wave is just a preference, and the delica can be easily wave moded with a zip tie.

Nooooooooooo!!!!!
It's ugly, it doesn't wave as well (Spyderco makes a VERY good Wave), and it won't open your beer.

If you want it waved, just buy one with the Wave.

Please, help stop the flood of hideous pictures of ugly knives assaulting our eyes. ;)

Ehh I personally think that the wave version looks worse, it's hollow ground instead of flat, and it's blade is narrower. Also, the wave version costs more, whereas a zip tie costs virtually nothing. As for the bottle cap... I don't drink :)
