Hi forum,
my first post on here.
I have made a small roller to then add a blade to split leather.
The approx size will be 75mm by 40mm and will be 3mm thick. It will need to have two slots to accommodate m4 bolts and have slight forward and backwards movement.
I guess I can buy the stock and shape and send to heat treat but just wondering if any members have spare blades close to this size I can buy from them.
thnx guys.
ps..im in London.

Post this under the "sheaths and such" forum on this BBS. There are a number of professional leather workers who frequent this and can probably help.

My pleasure to help out. With all of the leather work that Dave Ferry does, he also is a very prolific custom knife-maker and produces many great models and sheaths to match your preference. Note that he ALSO makes specific knives and blades for the leather-cutting process...totally unlike what I've ever seen on the market. Check him out.

Do you have any pics of such a leathersplitting blade ?
I wonder if these could be made from a piece of M2 machine hacksaw blade at 65-66 HRC.

Hi,
yes I was initially going to use a plane or electric planer blade. like the attached pic
s-l1600.jpg

but this is hss t1 steel and also is not available in the size I need.
Hand plane blade too narroe and only one centre slot.
I dont have the facilities to make slots in hard steel.
Here is the splitter blade with splitter. Bear in mind my own splitter is smaller than these.

How do I add pics the correct way.? I had to copy and paste this pic.
I cant seem to add any more photos.

here is the type of splitter. The blade lines up immediately at the exit of the two rollers.
Mine is an adapted roller that is meant to serve a different purpose but the principle is the same.

Wow looks like a cool splitter! Doing it yourself is probably the best way. Definitely have it heat treated by a pro, makes all the difference in the world. Welcome to BF!

Thanks guys for all the kind words!

Thnx but just to be clear,,this is not my machine..Although it is very similar mine is just slightly smaller.
Mine was meant for reducing the gauge of steel, embossing etc.
I just am pretty sure I could alter it to split leather.
This cool project forced (not really as I wanted one anyway haha) me to buy a welding machine.
Anyway the blade and getting it to fit/cut is the last frontier.
Thnx

Another guy in London pops into Sheaths and Such on occasion. Ya bet.

I buy most of my leather working equipment from Tandy. I live in Columbus, Ohio and we are lucky to have a large Tandy store in town. They even have classes on offer!

Hi guys thnx for the replies.
Happy to report I made the blade from Sandvik 14c28n and sent it out for HT,. Machine works like a dream.
Im probably going to try a couple different types of steels since I am a bit addicted now lol.
What do you guys think is very good steel for push cutting.?
Funnily enough, most of these machines seem to use D2 which in theory wouldnt be the best for push cuts and lower angles (mine uses single bevel 15 degrees)
