Need Advice on Choosing a Computer

Six syllables.....Sony Vaio destop. Nicest computer I've owned.

sony = excessive bloated not needed software installed by Sony, not to mention inflated price because of the name.

I will probably end up getting one of their TX series laptops andway though.

Compaq was bought by HP but they still have the Compaq line.

I have used Compaq Desktops and one Laptop for years. Never had a lick of trouble out of any of them. Other than old age and becoming too antiquated to justify upgrading. But thats any machine.

I had a girlfriend, a few years back, who owned a Compaq desktop computer, and she had a lot of problems with it. It turned out that her "new" computer had come with several/many refurbished parts, rather than new components. This was, I believe, before Hewlett-Packard purchased Compaq, and that particular problem may have been fixed, since.

I'll have to second the Compaq problems. I've *heard* that HP is OK but dear lord .... don't get Compaq no matter what. Oh the misery.

As someone who is probably one of the rarer people who will give you a balanced view of OSX vs. Windows XP, I have to say it really depends. When I bought my iBook a few years ago I thought that it totally was not worth the price, and there are some software compatibility issues. Currently, however, I really do think that the newest products on the Apple line are pretty nice, particularly the MacBook Pro, but it doesn't look like you want to spend $2000 on a new laptop, even if it can run both Windows and OSX.

Also, I don't know how computer-savvy your parents are; OSX does take a little getting used to for some people, and they find the more intuitive arrangement of the file system confusing. Basically, a lot of the Mac stuff is designed well, but for the money (if you are looking for more low-end stuff) I think you should go with the Dell since you get more processing power / $.
(I mean, ideally you would want one of the new super-powered AMD dual-core processors that blow Intel out of the water, but, you know--can't have everything :p)

For photo editing options, I think the key is to buy good software; a must-have would be something like Adobe Photoshop.

Dell or Mac......those are the only viable choices. if you dont play many games, then get a Mac.

check out warezstore.com for unbelivable software. very reliable....but also very gray market (if you get my drift).

Dell is horrible, then again I stopped buying production computers. I know a shop locally that custom builds at a good rate. For 1500 you can get yourself a mighty nice computer. I hate Dell, I bought one for my X and it didn't work, sent it back got another...worked ok... She got a laptop from dell, it broke instantly, sent it back got another...it sorta worked. If you don't play games get a Mac...if you play games do the research and build your own.

Or consider getting a powerful laptop to replace the desktop... BTW I have a Compaq laptop, I have NO problems with it. Never had have any problems with it. I have beat it to all hell too...literally. Its tough. It is the presario 1000x or soemthing like that.

I agree! Dell is lousy, at least it is the case in my country! Built your own com! It will save you money and also increase your knowledge of computers!

BTW, HP bought over Compaq, I know this cause I am selling Compaq. IF you want to buy, do buy Compaq cause HP and compaq are really the same machine but with diffrent pacakeing and selling at a diffrent price.
