i have purchased a tull tang carbon steel knife blank and have settled on oak for my handle (i like a bit of weight) and leather for my sheath (i like a classic) but i'm unsure if my procedure is sound and was wondering if anyone with experience could look it over for me and tell me what i've missed?

Procedure:- carve the scales from dried oak, and drill the holes to match the holes in the blank
- use angle/bench grinder to give the blade it's general edge and smooth off rough edges
- apply epoxy resin to the scales prior to riveting
- rivet the scales to the blade tightly (by hand and by means of a ball-pein hammer) so that the epoxy oozes out a little
- wipe the epoxy
- apply masking tape to the blade around the sacles and varnish the scales
- allow to dry
- get on with learning to make a decent sheath

HAVE I MISSED ANYTHING? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Moving to Shoptalk, where discussion for knifemaking belongs. The Custom and Handmade section is for discussion and critique of completed pieces and such.

Don't use varnish. You need to use something like teak oil or tru-oil instead. Does this blank already have a bevel?
