Hey guys I have 2 Wilton square wheel grinders, One fixed speed and one variable that I would like to have a good solid work rest for. I need the rest for flat grinding with a jig, Blades up to 14 inches is what I usually make and my free hand flat grind is not up to par. I have to free hand hollow grind all my filet knives and Bowies but want to get a good clean flat grind for some of these knives. What material do you guys recommend for the rest? I have saw aluminum and steel used but am not a machinist and need some guidance for the best set up, Weld or bolt together? Thanks in advance for all your ideas and help.

I believe aluminum would be to soft , I made one out of aluminum and things wanted to dig into it .

same happened here oneill. felt like it was grabbing. too much friction. i would go with steel. i dont think welded or bolted would make a difference. when i need a longer rest, i clamp a 12" x 3" x 1/4" piece of stock to my smaller work rest.
