I am in search of the best skinning knife for my husband for Christmas. I have looked at the Honey Badger and want to know if it is the best one?

The only thing you should know and accept as absolute truth is that there are no best knives.

EDITED:

Didnt mean to sound harsh so I'll elaborate a bit.

While that is true what I meant is any reputed or high quality skinner will do, and while I'm not into hunting myself, some very famous japanese guy on YouTube recommends Bark River or something made in 3V steel.

Not helpful new guy!!! This guys wife takes the time to post on here and that is your answer? People have been helpful to you, spread the love....
To OP, I am sure someone will pop on here with good advice. Check the custom knives for sale on here, there are nice skinners posted from time to time. There are two on there right now.
Russ

Thank you Russ! I take my gift giving seriously. My husband does not ask for much, but when he does I listen very carefully. The second year we were married - he had mentioned on several occasions over a period of 4-5 years he wanted a special camo style hunting rifle and over a two year time span I asked specific questions regarding the features to insure I purchased the exact one. He opened the rifle Christmas morning and began to cry with emotion that I pay that much attention to him. I only want to purchase the best for him - not to make the a mushy conversation!

Aquaman - is there a particular knife you would suggest? I know he is wanting a stainless steel blade - we live in the hot south coast - so I was told I need to be careful of the blade material so it will not rust in the salt air

Welcome!
If we knew your price range, and maybe even a little about what your lucky husband hunts, we could point you in the right direction.

Here's a good video.

They're all nice. Maybe get a gift card and let him pick.

That's a tough question. It's very subjective but we should be able to help you find one which suits your husband's needs very well. A handmade knife as suggested is a great idea but it's a good idea to understand what you are looking for. Some more information from you will help. If you can tell us this it will help a lot:
- what is your price range?
- what will your husband be skinning?
- does your husband like big knives or small ones or both?
- do you think your husband will look after his knife or do we need something that requires very little looking after? (eg stainless steel vs non-stainless steel )
- do you think this knife will only be used for skinning or will he use it for other things, like dispatching an animal, meat processing or woodwork?
- do you know if he would prefer a modern look or traditional?
- what does he currently use and what does he/doesn't he like about it? This gives us an idea of his preferences.
- do you know what he uses to sharpen his knives? Some sharpeners aren't effective with some steels.

Any information you can give will help us to point you in the right direction and hopefully help you too :) I have no doubt that plenty more people will respond to help out :)

(Edit: I just saw that some of these questions have been answered while I was typing this :) )

You bought him a nice rifle, so these Dozier-brand knives should fit your budget okay. They are highly rated. There are a couple of "skinners" in that selection to take a look at. NICE WIFE, BTW.
Since knives are a highly-personal item, you might wish to let him see the column of nice choices, and let him then read the specs and pick his own...

Who's "Honey Badger"?

Seems to be a few different Knives out there by that name, all seem to be similar in design, including knife blanks, so the maker is important.

If you're referring to the Arno Bernard honey badger, I can say I don't have any personal experience with one, but I have heard many good things about his Knives generally, and i do love his simple and sleek designs; an Arno Bernard is actually quite high on my own personal wish list.

Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner is another more cost friendly (usa made if that matters to your husband), pretty decent option, outside of the custom maker realm... Leaves plenty of room for a great knife AND...........

Bark River seems to be a decent choice too with lots of options (again I don't own any but going on established reputation)...

There really isn't a " best" though, outside of opinions and personal preferences... There are quite a few really good choices available though.

All steel is prone to rust, the difference is how well someone maintains the steel.
Go look in the knife makers forums, there's discussions about different steels as well as a for sell area. If you have any questions about anything, they will be able to help point you in the right direction.
I'm partial to Big Chris Knives, own several, and also live on the gulf coast. Some of the better non stainless steel is better resistant to staining/rust than simple carbon steel.

Welcome to BFC!!!!!.......enjoy your stay

You may also want to keep an eye on the Knife makers for sale area here on this forum, they have some very nice knives for sale here as well.

More specifics - No more than $500. He currently hunts deer and duck. He is on a quest - I guess you could call it a bucket list of animals he wants to claim. He is currently in Colorado stalking Mule Deer. He is really wanting to go after a Grizzly but I am slightly nervous considering he is only using his bow now for hunting.

Thank you for taking the time to help! Answers......

- Price Range - no more than $500
- Skinning Purposes - mostly deer but perhaps something different in his journey to cross game off his list
- Size - no sure it matters
- Blade - I know this answer for certain - Stainless Steel
- Purpose - this will be used only for skinning
- Style - I think a unique handle would be appreciated - he used to collected turned wood duck calls during my first pregnancy and loves the different wood species
- Currently - I am not sure what he currently uses for many reasons - he has a lot of knives - I don't think he particularly fond of any of them other than his grandfathers filet knife which he only uses for fish
- Maintenance - he just purchased a knife sharpening tool from Bass Pro Shop - he used it to sharpen our kitchen knives and it is amazing
I am sure how well he actually cares for his hunting gear - if it is like other things such as shoes and clothes - I might be wasting my time and energy :) With that said I am type A and everything has a home and kept in pristine condition.

Wife On a Mission,
If you want you can email me at BigChrisCustomKnives@Gmail.Com
I have a few hunters/skinners in stainless steels that are available.
I would be glad to show you what I have available.

I actually looked at Bob Dozier website last night - there is a 3 year lead time on those. I did email him this morning to ask if he perhaps had any available this year. I have also looked at the Honey Badger manufactured by MC Muhlhauser & Sohne. My cousin recommended the Warthog manufactured by Mc Muhlhauser & Sohne as well.

Strategy9

The honey badger - there is a funny video on the Huffington Post website called honey-badger-don't care (if you like humor - you should watch! The honey badger knife I was referring to is manufactured by M.G. Muhlhauser & Sohne. The honey badger by Arno Bernard knife is a hard knife to find as I search it last night. I have heard several people mention the Benchmade. I know there is not "The Best One Knife" out there but I want to get him one that is considered one of the top rated by people who know their knives and appreciate the craftsmanship of them as well. USA made is a plus!!! Thank You!

Forgive my lack of contribution, but i wanted to say MAD PROPS TO THE OP !!

I mean, you actually created an account here specifically to get the perfect gift for your significant other.

AWESOME.

Your husband truly is an enviable man.

Good luck on your mission. I have a feeling you came to the right place.
