Need an Axe

My GB Small Forest Axe is my all-time favourite. You're correct about it being top notch fit 'n' finish and sharpness, but coming in a close second to the similar Wetterlings for splitting capabilities due to the Wett's slightly chubbier cheeks. But you're really splitting hairs with that point. The GB SFA splits wood just fine. Seriously, unless you're going to be entering the Lumberjack Olympics, I wouldn't sweat the difference. The slight loss in splitting power and extra cost is completely worth the upgrade in fit 'n' finish, off-the-shelf sharpness, and pride of ownership that goes along with having a gorgeous Gransfors hanging around camp... worth it to me, that is. Some will say it's just a tool that's gonna get thrashed and dull eventually anyway, so don't waste your money. Valid? Sure, for some. Not for others, including me. There's also the fact that some Wetterlings have problems beyond their dearth of surface polish. I will post pics of close-ups of mine if anyone wants me to put my money where my mouth is. Play it safe, get the GB SFA.:)

I ended up picking up a Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe and a Wetterlings Swedish Forest Axe (32"). I am very impressed..blades came damn near shaving sharp. The fit and finish is still very good! I believe I dished out $130 total for both. For the GB I would have been double and my uses is less then minimum. So saving the money was ok in this case. One of my local shops had a GB Small Forest Axe, I brought in my LHA to show the owner we both agreed they were very close. The fit and finish on my 2 wetterlings were better than expected after seeing his stock of GBs. Some of the GBs where better but not many. I have also seen a few Husqvarna and was very impressed as well. These three (Husqvarna being made by wetterlings) have grown very close...at least the ones that I have seen first hand lately.

Hey soapbox, would you mind sharing where you bought the two Wetterlings? $130 for both sounds like a good deal. thanks

At 15 inches its right at the bottom of your length requirements, but man what a looker.

I'll thirds the Estwing campers axe (16"). Great axes at a reasonable cost. Plus the handle can't be easily broken. I won't say it can't be broken, never seen it happen, but it is amazing how people can find ways to break unbreakable products.

Smoky mountain Knifeworks...but they are now out of stock...I got them a while back. Bushcraft Northwest seems to have the Large Hunting for 70. I got my LHA for 59 back when SMKW had them in stock. But Seriously look at the Husqvarna 26" axe...it is made by Wetterlings and the length is just right for just about everything.

MSRP is $63

Just got my Husqvarna Multi Purpose Axe in today!! So far I'm very impressed with the fit and finish. I can't tell the difference between this Husqvarna and a GB and it was half the price!! Pictures soon!

I replaced my Fiskars with a Stihl. Stihl axes are very nice. For the price I would also buy a Husqvarna. The only reason I did not buy a Husqvarna is because there is a store that is a Stihl distributor maybe ten minutes from my house. In my opinion you can not go wrong with an axe made in the USA, Germany or Sweden, some of the best.

Perhaps this is a tad big for your needs. This is my axe of choice. It fits in my pack with the head or handle out at the top or it fits right down outside one side.

Oxhead Felling Axe, made in Germany. 27 inch handle, 5 1/2" cutting face, the blade is thin for felling trees. Bites into wood like there is no tomorrow. This axe means business and allows for a two handed grip making for a safer, stronger and more controlled swing. My knives are no competition.

I bought mine through Traditional Woodworkers in TX.
