Need assistance with a Umnumzaan.

I replaced my o-rings a while back. It worked well and was fun to change colors. I have had three umnumzaans and haven't needed thread locker yet, but I have used it on other knives. If you decide you would like to use some, i recommend only placing a little bit near the head of the screw, so you don't spread it over the entire screw as you tighten it down. It's a tip I learned here that worked well for me.

Yes locker is meant to mean thread locker. Loctite is a brand-name. There are other brands of thread locker available function equally well.

I will try and not use a thread locker for the moment. We will see what happens as the knife gets used more and more...

Thanks!

As with all the other CRKs most of the tension you feel is the friction of the detent ball on the tang of the blade. I can push my lockbar over and the blade drops free. Putting a teeny dab of fluorinated grease on the track where the ball locks up with the blade will help smooth out the action some!

This is all well and good if the knife is already broken in.. All my 21s and Regulars do this. Umnumzaan on the other hand needs a little bit more time to break in.

Fluoro grease is always applied to all parts that requires it. So we're good there.

ice_man, I think you should try to set the pivot tighntess. I've tightened a pivot pretty snug and the blade move a freely, opening with strong click. Then I'm retightened it some more, and have found that the blade becomes opening harder but now it's opening without any audible click. And the lock-up position becomes a little early.

Just go to a good hardware store and you will find an assortment of o rings. A big box store Fastener Dept may not have them that small, but local independent hardware stores usually do. You can find them there.

I have three 'Zaans and have replaced them several times.

Changing Tip: Open the blade fully, and use the area between the blade stud and handle to keep the o ring stationary. Press upward on the o ring along the groove path and it will form an oval and some of it will stick up out of the groove. Push parallel to the grove, and you will see what I mean.

When it sticks up out of the groove a hair, use that same fingertip (your index finger) to get behind it and start it out of the groove, like changing a tire. When you have it started off, push the lock bar with your other hand and release the blade a little, like you are trying to close it. That will release the pinched o ring between the blade stud and handle, and allow you to continue pulling it off. Do this on both sides.

After replacing the o rings, close the blade and ensure the very tip of the blade is not sticking out of the handle a bit near the lanyard hole. Thicker o rings will make that happen. You will notice when looking in the bin of loose o rings at the hardware store that some are thicker than others by a hair. Try the smallest ones first, then thicker ones. I actually change mine right in the store, that way I know I chose the correct o rings out of the bunch of them there.

Buy some extras for spares, 6 or so that fit, and you're good to go for years. They are inexpensive that way, and no waiting!
