Need ATS-34

Or buy 154CM (same thing) or CPM154 (better version of same thing).

Admiral Steel has ATS 34, Or like above just buy 154cm from New Jersey Steel.

They only had 3/16 and 1/4. We use 3/32 and 5/32. We tried the CPM154 and the finish is so rough it takes A LONG TIME to smooth. It is unacceptable! Have you found some with a good finish?

Hitachi made a bad batch of ATS-34. The alloys were not sufficiently mixed and there is lots of alloy banding and cloudy areas in the steel. Knifemakers stopped buying the steel. We threw away a significant quantity of material.

The mill scale on ATS-34 was about the same as CPM154.

Verify the finish after heat treating is acceptable before buying a large quantity.

I used ATS-34 for years, then 154-CM, and then CPM-154CM (often simply called CPM-154). Because of the particle metallurgy, I find the CPM-154CM is the easiest to grind and finish, and produces the best edge. They are all chemically the same, otherwise. I don't think the final finish should be any different on CPM-154CM compared to ATS-34. If anything, I would expect the ATS-34 to be worse. I would suspect the HT or some other cause if the finish was bad on your CPM-154.

Where do you buy your CMP-154CM that has a good finish?

When ATS-34 started having problems, I switched to CPM 154cm. I have bought the CPM 154 from Aldo and also Pops. One thing I noticed was I could use 220 grit belts to get the mill scale off the flats of the ATS-34. With the CPM 154, 220 grit just polishes the flats. I need to use 120 grit to clean up the flats. Other wise, profiling, grinding the bevels, etc. I can't tell any difference. I have been very pleased with how the CPM 154 turns out.

I think he's referring to the mill finish, no the final maker-applied polish. Is that the case?
You can order all this stuff ground so that awful pebbled texture doesn't have to be removed. Aldo offers it both ways.

Yes, the finish of the CMP154CM steel that we bought is very rough out of the packaging! I realize you can get it ground for an additional 50% cost, but the ATS-34 that we have been using is a nice smooth finish. That is what started my search for info is where can we buy ATS-34 in 3/32 and 5/32 thickness.

It sounds to me like you are talking the difference between hot rolled vs cold rolled. That isn't necessarily anything to do with the type of steel. Maybe with something special only being produced in small quantities the mill may only hot roll, not sure whether it would be safe to assume all ATS34 was rolled the same way. The RWL34 that I have is definitely cold rolled, very smooth finish, but this page http://damasteel.se/files/8414/5670/2913/flyer_rwl34_A4.pdf states that it is available as both cold and hot rolled. I also have Sandvik 12C27 from two different sources, the 5mm thick is hot rolled with a pitted dimply surface that requires a fair bit of grinding to clean up, while the 3.2mm and 2mm is all cold rolled and smooth, no pits or dimples at all, although the thinner stuff is much more clearly straight off a coil, significant curvature to be straightened.

So rather than hunting just for ATS34, maybe you need to mention the rolling process you want when talking to suppliers...?
