Hello all,

I'm working on making a couple of custom firesteels for my wife and I and would love to have some brightly colored material for the small handle that goes on them. Would anyone have some scraps of Orange, Yellow, or other brightly colored handle material (e.g. micarta, g-10, corian, or otherwise) that they wouldn't mind parting with? I would be willing to pay for shipping.

These pieces do not need to be real big. Basically they need to be thick enough to drill a 1/4" hole in for the ferro rod and roughly 1" long by 3/4" wide or so. Dimensions do not have to be exact and I am certainly, as a beggar, not going to be very picky at all.

I want the bright handle material in case they are dropped. It's darn hard to find anything in the woods when dropped, especially at night. I've always thought the OD green firesteel was a bit dumb. Seriously if I'm so worried about being spotted that I don't want my firesteel visible, then I'm not going to be starting a fire anyway. Otherwise I'm going to keep it where it's secure, and therefore not visible anyway. Just my opinion anyway.

thanks,

Charlie

Where would a person come across some G10? I would like to make some stuff too and just knowing where to get it would be nice.

Oh, thanks for the tip, one of those come up about once a month down here.

there are a whole bunch of knife making websites that sell handle material. I recently picked up some stuff from a site called jantz supply.

Sheffield Knife Supply has the largest selection of different types of G10 that I know of! They are the only ones that I know of that consistently carry all of the weird colors as well as the normal ones.

coriansamples.com. They have some bright samples for $2 and it's easy to work with.

^^ or ask if you can browse the scrap bin at a cabinet shop. Avoid a product called 'Avonite' though. It doesn't finish well and is a bugger to polish.

I've also used jantz and TKS before. I was happier with them than with Knifekits dot com.
