Need Deer Antler

That's a lot of antler, are you looking for lefts or rights? You might try calling all the local Taxadermy guys and seeing if thy have extra sheds. Most hold onto them becaus thy use the points to repair broken points on mounts for customers.

Thanks JT. Good idea. I'll look into that. I was hoping to find a guy with a storage shed full. I know they exist.
Oh, sorry I want Rights.

Lots of communities have urban hunting programs to "thin" overpopulated nuisance deer herds. In many cases, the meat is processed for charitable donation, and the antlers often just pile up somewhere -- often with whoever it is that processes the meat. This is what I learned about my own local deer thinning program. I know a guy who organizes the local hunt, and he says he can get me antlers galore. It hasn't happened yet, but this was just a few days ago and I'm still working on connecting the dots.

Antler is really valuable in the Asian markets so lots of these big hordes of antlers are packed into shipping containers and shipped over to them.

My buddy has hundreds of them, but they're all sun bleached. I'm eventually going to try some knives with antler handles but I haven't done the first bit of study about it yet.

Bleached isn't bad, you can easily dye them.
Can you get me in touch with him?

i know it'snot the same but if you have a bandsaw try using cow leg bones for scales.
you can uselly get them from a butcher shop frozen for about a 1'50 a piece.

I am a lifelong deer hunter, so I know a fair bit about antlers. In todays market folks have discovered that they have a $ value. Having said that I recently used the last of my personal stock that was earmarked for Pen or Knifemaking--to get a new supply I spent a couple evenings scouting on E-bay and made a few bids, and in the end analysis I got a lot of antlers for what I consider good prices. There are a few individuals that are affiliated with game ranches and they are selling the antlers that have been cut off of their herd of Bucks. There are lot's of different antler options--pieces, complete racks, rights and lefts only and various types of critters--Whitetail Deer, Elk, Carribou, Stag and others. I highly recommend checking it out.

Please don't turn this into a buying/selling thread. As long as the topic is on sources and methods, that is fine. If there are offers, make them by PM or email. Any selling offers and this will get moved to The Exchange.

Oldwolf, I would suggest you put a thread in The Exchange Knifemaking Materials and post it as a WTB.

If you have an Academy Sports close you they sell deer antler pieces in the pet section that work pretty good for handles.
