Hi Folks
I just returned from a long stint in Costa Rica. More importantly, I got to use a lot of knives there in the rain forest guiding. I couldn't believe what the humid climate did to my knives though. My Martindale paratrooper went to hell with rust. My sog--ats 34 I think--got rusty. Is there a good all-around oil I could get at a hardware store to use on my knives to help prevent this kind of damage; something to coat the blade with every now and then to keep them from rusting and getting more damaged? Also, should I sand the blades down then add oil or what? Thanks a lot for your help.

wyldoliv,

yes, polishing helps. In fact a perfect mirror polish offers the best rust prevention because the surface is the smoothest this way.
Oil is probably a bit too volatile but what really helps is good old wax. Get a block of natural bee wax and rub it onto the blade thoroughly.

PS: Just re-read your post. Yes, you'll have to remove any rust completely first or it will continue to rust under whatever coating you apply. Get some dry/wet paper in 300, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit and finish with Flitz and you will have a nice mirror polish (and also aching hands and arms). ;-)
