Need feedback from EdgePro Apex users

Are you sure you are sharpening all the way to the apex? Are you getting a burr? You should easily be slicing paper from a 220 stone.

yesi have a 60x mag to make sure i'm sharpening and i check it with every stone, I can't get a clean paper slice untill 600. I also flaten my stones when needed

Doesn't make sense. Are you doing one stroke left, one stroke right and repeat before you attempt the paper test? That toothy of an edge should slice right through paper no problem. Are you experiencing that with all steels?

I still reckon there's a micro rolled edge.

Try stropping on your jeans or a brown paper bag. Just a couple of trailing-edge passes.

Alternatively, cheat and cut a quick microbevel ~5 degrees per side above what your primary is at.

If you drag the blade along the edge of your nail like you're trying to slice the tip, do you feel irregularities? It should be biting consistently the whole length of the cutting edge, and it should be biting into your nail reasonably well.

I really do not consider this cheating. This is good deburring process.

I know it is, it's what I do. My 0560 is at something like 28dps with a 34dps micro, that's probably just the least bit convex from the 0.5micron strop (5/5 3/3 1/1 on dense thin cardboard)

yes all steal. and yes i get the burr with the 120 and the do the other side i then do 5-10 very light stokes per side, flipping each time, to knock off the burr, when i say lite i mean pushing with the thumb lite

i will try the 5* thing.

I always go to 600 with my knives for this reason. LOL, on the nail it feels fine constant bite, it just does not cut paper. on my buck knife (the agle guide is at the TOP of the setting maxed out) that knife will not cut paper at all but i know its sharp

Wait, what? Are you saying that you have the pivot at the top of the vertical rod?

If so you are making some insanely obtuse edges... I'm surprised that it will cut skin... :o

You too...

Why are you guys making your edges so obtuse (obese?)?

28 per side is more than I'd do for an axe.

That angle is only for my buck knife, i only matched the grind that was on it..... (its really old, my grandpa gave it to me) rest of my angel on the 10 to 22 range (per side)

IDK, It has to be a burr. Try a draw cut in wood before you take the final passes. It works for me when sharpening softer stainless that throw an annoying burr.

I don't believe it's a burr. A burr will slice paper fairly well in my experience.

I still think that you are having one of two problems. Either you are not fully apexing the edge, or your edge is obtuse to a degree that makes it inefficient.

I woke up this morning and realised what I'd said. Divide by two, that's the total angles I'm using.

14dps with a 17dps micro.

*awkward turtle*

My axe, on the other hand, is convex and I started at 30 degrees inclusive, so at the apex it shouldn't be past 45 degrees.

Yeah, I feel the judgemental stares now

EDIT: Back to the question of the OP - have you tried marking up the whole cutting edge with a Sharpie, and checking after each set of passes that you're still addressing the very apex? Another thing you can look out for is the scratch pattern, if you brush each stone you progress up, in a different diagonal.

You know... I should have listened to my inner voice that said a guy with a 0560 and a .5micron strop doesn't mix with that edge angle. I mean weirder things have happened, but that's just common sense. :D
