Need fixed blade advice

My two cents may not be worth all that much, stacked up against the change on the table from some of the more knowledgable regulars here, but my advice is this:

Go to a show (Gun or knife, you'll find a lot of the same folks at both) and HANDLE a few knives. Until then, it's all just words on a page or screen. Find one that feels good. Whether it's a Randall or a Busse, a Chris Reeves or Ka-Bar, if YOU don't like the way it feels in your hand, you won't use it, and you've just wasted (potentially A LOT of) money. And a high-priced custom piece in a box is FAR more useless than a Cutco in your hand (although I do not doubt that this point will be in contention).

I think pretty much everyone here has their favorites, and we all like to support each other, but when it comes down to it, YOU have to be the judge. That's why I think your best option is to pick some of these things up before you make a decision.

Good, rather small fixed blade...BUSSE Basic #3! Great knife, great steel, great company!

I have a Nimravus Cub that I pretty much beat the hell out of all around the house. It does everything I throw at it, the ATS34 sharpens up easy enough, and it is small enough to carry comfortably all day and nite.

My personal favorite for a mid-sized daily utility knife is the US Marshall by Livesay. Handle work is second to nonw, granted you like micarta, and the blade is DEF. a WORKER!!!

Take you pick, but I highly rek'mnd looking at the Livesay link posted above...you may even find something there that better suits your needs...FOR LESS $$$!!!

Good luck,
Steve in NYC

Hi Greyfist, welcome to the forums. Throw $250 at the 4.5" blade pictured in this thread and I think you'll be a happy man for a long, long time to come.

The only problem you'll ever run into with this one is years from now figuring out who to bequeath it to in your will. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
