My two cents may not be worth all that much, stacked up against the change on the table from some of the more knowledgable regulars here, but my advice is this:
Go to a show (Gun or knife, you'll find a lot of the same folks at both) and HANDLE a few knives. Until then, it's all just words on a page or screen. Find one that feels good. Whether it's a Randall or a Busse, a Chris Reeves or Ka-Bar, if YOU don't like the way it feels in your hand, you won't use it, and you've just wasted (potentially A LOT of) money. And a high-priced custom piece in a box is FAR more useless than a Cutco in your hand (although I do not doubt that this point will be in contention).
I think pretty much everyone here has their favorites, and we all like to support each other, but when it comes down to it, YOU have to be the judge. That's why I think your best option is to pick some of these things up before you make a decision.
