Well, after much consideration I've decided on a Fixed Blade Pocketknife from Josh Graham. I had all but forgotten his knives. The others I was considering (Dozier, Nealy, and Murray Carter) aren't listed as tableholders for the Knifemaker's Guild Show, so I don't think they're going this year. I guess I'll still go to the show, but I'm not going to wait until then to get a knife. So, it looks like a Graham knife is my best bet. Josh was very kind, even while babysitting a crying child, and said he had one or two tantos sitting, already heat treated, that he's not taking to the Blade show (otherwise all his efforts are in preparing for the show). So, he said he'll finish it off with the black canvas micarta handle, 600grit finish, red liner, mosaic pins, and a kydex pocket sheath that I requested when he gets back from the show. The idea of a fixed blade that is convenient to carry as my Spyderco Clipit's just excites me! And all at a very fair price! I can't wait! Thanks Josh! :D

You will NOT be disappointed. I have a Razel in my pocket now and a drop point on order. Josh and Jon craft a fine knife.

Excellent choice. A Razel is on my list. Man this damn list... I hope I can live long enough!

Hehe, yeah, "the list" has damned us all.

I'm not too sure about the tanto, but the overall design of the Fixed Blade pocketknife is too cool to really care about the blade shape. I know it will be a good work knife, but I'm not too sure about how it will perform at slicing and other delicate stuff. I wanted to order a spear point, but I don't really feel like waiting 6 months right now. Maybe I'll order another later on. I really wish I could go to the Blade show. I'm graduating that weekend, so it's a no way to get out of it situation. Any chance somebody could pick up a few things for me? Lol

question: for those who have a Graham knife...do you like the kydex or leather sheath better?

The other day I saw some nice custom Al Polkowski knives with spear point blades advertised on BladeArt.com.

Jedi: I would recommend BOTH sheaths. The leather pocket sheath is unique, well-designed and finished. I find it quite comfortable, and it hits just the right point on my pocket where I am not afaid of cutting or stabbing myself when drawing or resheathing. The kydex multi-use is also very well done. Why both? The kydex is a nice rig for driving, or concealment, or for harsher environs. The leather is cool, classy, and practical. They actually compliment each other, and extend the range of carry options. And the price is fair. I'd go for both upfront.

Check out the Blackjack Small and Blackjack Slick. Both come in a variety of handle styles. The newest is with a leather handle and aluminum butt cap. Very cool looking indeed. Plus the leather sheath that comes with it is really nice.

They are not "hi tech" looking at all. Quite the opposite. They are extremely traditional looking, but with a 3" blade, are very handy in size. Plus they are hand ground covex blades.

Also check out Bark River knives. I don't own any, but they are supposed to be really great and at reasonable prices.

If you want a more tactical, hi tech look, you have lots of choices. You might want to check out TOPS knives. A really large assortment of styles and sizes.

i ordered a really sweet little fixed blade from CHAX Knives. it's a 3.75 inch warncliffe called the Cutter's Delight. i got it in M2 for a very small charge but you can get it in high carbon steel for 80 or add a fewe bucksa and get it in you choice of steels. i haven't gotten it yet but i'll be sure to post a review. so far, the maker, Chase, has been really cool and answered all my questions. i just ordered a second knife from him to my specs. i highly recomend looking into Chax Knives, it's a very pain-free way to get into custom knives and deal with a great guy!

Well, thanks for the other recomendations, but I'm going with the Graham one. As far as the kydex sheath, I meant the kydex version of the pocket sheath, not the mutil carry. Also, Josh informed me that he also has a wharncliffe blade ready to go. So, now I have a dilemma: tanto or wharncliffe?

Oh, sorry about that Jedi. I didn't know they offered a purely pocket kydex sheath. Is it the combo neck/pocket sheath? Anyway, I don't have one, but I sure wouldn't worry about the design/quality. I'd still opt for a leather sheath as well.

The CRKT Ryan Plan B (I got the "for those who serve"-version with a black coating) is a neat-looking small knife. The handle material is only Zytel, but the zig-zag scales and the ergonomic shape offer a very secure grip. The blade steel (AUS-6) could be better at holding an edge, but on the other hand it will not rust when you carry it around your neck next to your skin.
Its Zytel sheath may not be the best out there (it's a little bulky), but it comes with both a ball chain and a clip and thus provides you with multiple carry options - and at such a low price point, you could always purchase a custom sheath for the Plan B.

The Fällkniven WM-1 looks a bit boring, but it's a fine little work knife with a VG-10 blade.

If you want something larger, I'd recommend the Spyderco Fred Perrin - it was designed as a defensive knife, but due to its versatile blade shape and good edge geometry it will handle everyday cutting chores with ease as well.

...or you could order a custom.

If you're absolutely sure that you want a Graham, go with the Wharncliffe (do a serarch on "tanto" and you will find numerous threads where people complain about this blade shape).

Yeah, I did decide on the wharncliffe with the leather sheath and a giraffe bone handle if that's not too expensive. I'd really prefer drop point or spear point, but I think he's taking them all to the Blade show. Either way, it's still going to be a great knife!

my fav carry fixed blade, and the one i have found which works the best for me/the way i dress/etc is a bud nealy amoeba, a great knife w/a great sheath (MASS system) which i carry a lot now, almost all the time. it also will work as a necker, and the short handle works very well for concealment too. they run about $250, wish i woulda gotten the damascus and carbon fibre for like $319 or so.
