Need folder opinions.

I got the big Manix and I am still surprised with its weight. It looks like it should be a boat anchor, but it's not. My little Kershaw Storm is heavier! Really good blade size on this thing also. It fills my hand but it's not thick...ya I like it..a lot.

The Manix is excessively heavy for my taste:
6.1oz versus the Ritter's 3.75oz. That's some difference.

I think that the Cabela's or Ritter Griptilian variants would make a great canoe trip knife.
Also consider the Spyderco Endura. It is an excellent ergonomic folder that is a superb cutter.

At 4.2oz the Storm is actually lighter than the Manix.

Of the 4 you are considering, for me it would be a decision between the Manix and the Ritter Grip because S30V should be a little more rust resistant than D2.

Others that I would recommend:

Spyderco D’Allara Drop Point and any of the Spyderco Salt series.

In the end I think that a couple of yellow handled Salts would be my choice: a plain edged Pacific Salt and a serrated Atlantic Salt. I would also stash a wood saw equipped SAK or a multitool in a dry bag.

This folder is a back up to my fixed blades Im getting a ritter and a D2 grip regardless because I want them. I already have the manix, mini manix and the socom elite. I guess I will just take all of them out and test the hell out of them and see which one im most comfortable with.

Hmmmm. Did you actually weigh them or go by manufacturers stats? Anyway, who cares? I'm a big full grown man and the Manix is a light weight. A guy would have to be pretty "delicate" to be bothered by it.

Those weights are from the respective official websites. When you are carrying a knife in addition to multi tool and flashlight on your belt all day weight becomes an issue, for delicate me anyway.

Okay JLfletcher I am a huge Manix fan but I just picked a 40$ Gerber Firestorm and it hasn't left my side since. It is a stout Rick Hinderer design that looks and feels nukeproof!

I have 3 of the 4 I asked about now all I am missing is the ritter grip. I got the D2 grip from the UPS man today. I got the large model with a plain edge and olice drab handle and I am very impressed with it. Cabelas is kind of expensive but they are the only place you can get one. The edge came scary sharp. It is comfortable in the hand and very light. I want the RSK really bad but I ordered my first Emerson earlier and my wife is not happy so it might be a couple of weeks before I get it.

Any of the folders you listed would work fine. Folders are largely a personal preference item..weight, how it fits in your hand and pocket, how it opens and closes. All the good steels are pretty close in performance. Make sure you wipe down the blade if it gets wet.

I'll second Helle's comment. Put a lanyard on any knife you want to keep 'til the end of the trip. Always have the lanyard secured. Never remove the knife from the lanyard while you're in the boat.

Many of us have paid expensive educations learning the value of a lanyard.
