Need forumite's opinions - Police Model

I would have to say NO GO for a zytel Police model. I think that your team could design a better lightweight model for LEOs. How about a survey asking LEOs what they would like in a lightweight model? You would probably get as many answers as people surveyed but it would be worth a try. The Calypso seems pretty close to a lightweight Police model as it is. Keep the Police as it is. You have a good assortment of variations on that model as is.

The only Police model I own is the Plain blade with G-10 handle material. I also have 2 G-10 Rookies One plain and one serated, The only improvements that could be made to these that I could see would be the addition of a metal liner to keep the blades locking up tightly. They seem to get some play around the pivot because the G-10 doesn't support the pivot as well as a metal liner would.I also have the all stainless Rookie and it is as tight as the day I received it.I wouldn't mind seeing a 60/40 plain/ Serated blade combo maybe.

I have to side with those who say "NO" to a lightweight version of this knife. Reason being that I have had bad experiences with another "lightweight" version and I think it would be blastphemous to disgrace a knife that has, for nearly a generation, been the standard of which all other folders are judged by in such a manner.

Making a lightweight version of the Police would be like replacing the Copper plated Statue of Liberty with a green plastic version. It would be like replacing Danelle with a mannequin. It is like a tofu turkey at Thanksgiving.

Don't do it.

It is not a matter of whether or not you are paranoid, it is am matter of whether or not you are paranoid enough.

Please do not make a zytel version, it would distroy its class. I have been carring a new plain edge police for te past weeks and like it a lot. If you want to make a new police version, make it with carbonfiber or titinium handles and flat ground CMP440V.

The Police model is a model with class and style and it should stay that way.

Sal, thanks for asking.

Sal, thanks for listening! No on the lightweight Police Model, as many have said, G-10 is lightweight enough. I perfer the Military when I am in uniform anyway. Now, if you asking... a smaller Military would be just ducky! Fish

Sal,

I've got to go along with the majority here in voting NO for a light weight Police if it would mean going to a Zytel handle. Frankly, I don't know how much weight could be saved anyway over the current G-10 model @ 3.4 oz. (According to your catalog, the Endura 98 is 2.9 oz.)

In any case, if you do consider adding a new variant, my preference would be a textured AL or Ti handle, tip-down, Military style clip, no change from mid-lock.

BTW, from an earlier thread, I think that I've got a fairly rare Police model -- uncoated aluminum handles, flush pins, and no "Police" or "Police Model" blade marking. Tipping the scales at barely 4 oz, its already the lightest of my large folders.

Sal -- when you asked us our preference between a flat-grind Micarta Calypso Jr. and a stainless hollow ground version, most of us chose the former. We were all surprised when the average ELU prefer to buy the stainless version.

Reflecting about it I think one of the reason is the feeling of heft and solidity/dependability brought about by a stainless handle.

This is one of the reason that I still like my Endura II -- looks and feels solid in the hand.

I vote "No" to a zytel Police. The zytel Endura already fulfills this role.

Changes I would also like to see in the current stainless Police : bigger hole, presence of choil, and increase "grippability" (e.g., kraton insert), tough black coating on blade, handle and clip.

I also prefer tip down. I think a rolling lock version will be an improvement as you yourself admit that this lock type increases lock strength.

Thank you for soliciting our thoughts.

Hello, Sal!

What about:

titanium handle (some texture needed?)
440V blade
a reversible clip.
and a bead blasted version, maybe?

Best regards

Ivan

sal,
corduroy said it all as far as i'm concerned.
i couldn't put it better.
greetings,

Great information! Thanx much. The spyderforum is definitely a two way street with info sharing. Valuable info sharing in my opinion. Looks like no plastic Police is in the future.

Same basic design concept with a few changes.

1. 440-V blade steel
2. Flat ground blade(no false edges :p )
3. G10 or Carbon fiber handle(Titanium is also acceptable)
4. Can we say "Rolling Lock"
5. Reversible clip option.
6. Phosphoro bronze washers(much smoooooother)

Just a few pennies into the pot.

Like they say if it isn't broke don't fix it.
I say stay with the SS G-10 Flat grind, tip down. NO PLASTIC PLEASE!!!
Maybe some decorations for the handles like laser etching to cater to the different groups looking for that personalized touch.
Thanks for asking.

Sal,

The stainless Police model was my first "quality" knife. Still have it. I would like to see the G-10 model with a flat ground blade of 440V.

Thanks,

Waldo

Hi Sal!

I would like to see a flat-ground blade with a blue G-10 handle.
Thanks for asking

Sal,
There isn't enough difference between the Police and Endura models to make a Zytel Police model work. I would also have to say no to one of those.

I like the G10 police models, especially the newer ones with the metal spacer like the Wegners. Personally, I think this version cries out for a liner lock like the Wegner. It would be very smooth and easy to operate with one hand. (Although the Rolling Lock does have a lot of appeal.)

Tip down carry and the old (original) grind with the Weehawk cuts on the back of the blade. The flat grind looks too much like a cut-down military.

The compound grind gives the impression of greater strength. Besides, the original grind is very distinctive to the Police model and is responsible for a large portion of it's appeal. The new ones with the flat grind don't sell too well for me.

A partially serrated blade is a good idea too. My customers have been asking for partially serrated Police models for a long time.

So. To summarize:
No to Zytel
Yes to G10 handles (Wegner style, black metal spacer & liner))
Liner lock (Rolling lock?)
Tip down
Original grind blade, Partially serrated.
Oh, and black clip.

(P.S. I would really like to see the liner lock version with the P/S blade. No flat grind.)

Isn't it amazing how 2 cents worth of opinion takes up a quarter's worth of paper???

Please excuse the crayon. They won't let us have anything sharp in here.

Sal-
I wouldn't change the shape, the lock, or the clip on the Police Model. What I would change is the weight. My customers almost always comment on how heavy it is. However, I remember how much the Ti-Po (I thought of that all by myself-clever, huh?) retailed for, and I wouldn't have one if not for Cutlery Shoppe. So, how about lightening the handle, with slots cut through, or lightening grooves? I didn't like the Aluminum Police because the blade seemed to gall on the blade, and cause drag. Would the nylon washers that are all the rage these days do any good? It might even be kinda cool to assemble it with Torx screws-just use a proprietary size so that your CS dept. isn't always putting ELU's knives back together for them. Remember: free advice is usually worth the price.

... also a notched thumb rest like the Military's would aid better in delicate work...

All I wanted was the G10 Police with a tip up carry... any chance of a reversible clip model or maybe just a bigger (3 3/4 inch blade) G10 Rookie?

Ahhh!!! missed the start of this thread!

Please consider a reissue of the Police with titanium handles and a 440V blade!!!!!!

Great knife, large blade, slim profile, everything else is superior except the steel and Ti handles would lighten it a lot!
