I'm looking for some kind of smaller machete, 10-12 in. blade or so. I'd like it for driving deer or bear whenever I'm hunting, some of the stuff we go through is pretty thick. I would like to just get a small Aki or Barteux machete, but I'm a little short on funds, so I'm gonna try to keep it under $60. Right now I'm debating between a Spec Plus Bolo, a Cold Steel LTC Kukri, or an Ontario short machete. As you'll notice, I'm trying to go with carbon steel. If anyone has any suggestions on which of these to go with or any others I may want to look at, pleae let me know. Thanks in advance for you're advice.

After extensive testing I've been doing on one of Roass Aki's stainless machetes, I do not think you can find a better product at any price. I'll have a full review up soon. For under $60, though, I think you should take a serious look at something like a Himalayan Imports village Sirupati (a thinner more lightweight khukuri...I'm getting one in the next few days, so look for a report) or something from the Ontario machete family.

I own both the CS Kukri(the GL not the LTC) and the Spec plus bolo. I've use the Bolo extensively and its never failed to get the job done. THe Kukri is great too and Im sure it would perform as well as the bolo if not better but they are a little on the pricey side. You really couldn't go wrong w/ either.

Brigade Quartermasters for sure.

SURVIVAL 12" MACHETE W/ SHEATH -

Item # MCH412 $16.99

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys, I appreciate your help. I think I'm going with the LTC kukri, I can get a factory second for $60. My reasoning behind this is the forward cant to the handle. I have an 18 in ontario machete, and using it with that staight handle is murder on my wrist. I think I may get the kukri and 12 in machete from Brigade Quartermasters and use each alternately to see which suits me better. The machete's actually cheap enough that I can do that. I might post some results on the reviews forum if anyone's interested. Well, thanks again for everyone's advice.

A straight machete is murder on your wrist? When I'm in practice, come see me.

Until then, that's why I recommended a 1/16" thick Aki because the light weight is easy on wrists, shoulders, and muscles. I'm afraid the LTC may be too heavy, although I do not know what it weighs in at. I know it is murder to use a standard 15" OAL khukuri from HI or GH unless you are chopping into something substantial as all that weight and momentum is murder on the body for lighter stuff...

Chiro, the LTC only weighs about 17 ozs. Its made from 1/8 in stock, and I want something with a little bit of weight behind it. I'm not saying that the Aki machete wouldn't be awesome, in fact after reading your review it was the first thing I thought of, but I just don't have the money right now. Thge LTC is about the same weight as any of the machetes I'm considering, and it does have the forward cant, so I think I'm at least gonna give it a shot. Besides, you can't have too many knives.
