need great knife for backpacking

ive narrowed my search down to a rat7, a fallkniven a1 or a2, a swamprat or a busse. tell me which one you think is best and any other suggestions. also which would be better for a rat7, 1095 carbon steel or d2 tool steel

I re-read the original post after reading pitdog's reply. :)

Of the brands you mentioned, I would say the Fallkniven A1, Swamp Rat Camp Tramp and Busse Steel Heart, Hell Razor, Natural Outlaw or Battle Mistress would fill the bill. Most knife makers would recommend you avoid D2 blade steel in a blade bigger than four or five inches, but with these choices, the makers have figured out the best steel for the knife.

I don't have an A1 (but do have an F1), but I have the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp, Busse Anniversary Steel Hearts (regular and "skinny" models) and Battle Mistress.
They are incredible blades and probably better investments than you'll find on the stock market.... ;)

Interesting that we have never heard back from the original poster, so we really don't know what "backpacking" means to him....

It could mean ultralight, through hiking, just walking a couple miles back in the woods, etc. The further you hike, the less dead weight iron you will want to have to carry.

Remember, as a backpacker you are actually an ultra highly prepared survivalist!!! You have your shelter, food, and clothng (and hopefully a good woman!) with you...so the basics are already well taken care of. Unless things go really wrong, all you are going to need that knife for is to cut open those MRE packages.

Hmmm... MREs for two people for one day probably weigh more than a Busse Battle Mistress! So much for being weight-conscious.... :)

I just got a Bark River Ultralight Bushcraft knife.

I think it would be a great backpacking knife. Here's a review

MREs are a great idea! you can sharpen the flatbrod (crackers) on a stone and use it as a knife.

+1 for SAK. I have a couple, but find the farmer usually finds it's way into my pocket. After that a 4-5" general purpose knife (Mora, RAT, or Grohmann) adds some peace of mind. It's usually worth a little extra weight to know you have a backup plan that can work. ;)
