Even empty, an auto trans is still half full. I did a lot of work filling, draining and flushing transmissions at the shop I used to work at, and as far as I can tell, as long as it still moves, it hasn't done any damage to itself. at worst, as the pressure inside drops, the plates will begin to separate and you won't seem to be able to get any power for the RPM you are giving. at that point you can get some heating /burning issues, (like half riding the clutch in a manual)
Don't be surprised if in a week or so it is a little low with no leaks, auto transmitions have all kinds of nooks and crannies for air pockets to form and it might take a few days to shake them out. it was more common than not at the shop, to the point that we told people to come back in a week so we could re-check it.
