Hey yall,

I am trying to make a prod for a medieval crossbow replica (the 'bow' part of the crossbow). I have no idea what type of steel to use for this sort of project, but high carbon spring steel springs to mind. Also, I have no idea how to judge the 'strength' of a prod before it is made, so the only means of adjustment I would have is to grind it thinner or shorten it.

Anyhow, what type/source of steel do yall suggest I use?

The two that come to mind are 5160 and 1095. 5160 will be easier to HT. 1095 will come in more size choices. You didn't provide much info on the bow type (Hand draw, simple non high-power replica, crank draw, lever draw, etc.)I would try 1/8X1 to 1/8X1.50 stock. After shaping, harden and draw a spring temper.(It may be wiser to make the prod and have a spring shop do the HT. You ought to go to a custom spring shop and ask them what they recommend. They will most likely have the steel on hand, and can sell you a piece.

1095 all the way. Jack Levine out of Brooklyn, N.Y. who took Best of Show at Atlanta last year made one with 1095. After he heat treated the bow he set it up on a cam and flexed it for days and found no change in it at all. It's all in the temper I guess.
