Need help buying.

I think the Spydercon military or Para military would be a great EDC. I also like Emersons offerings.

BRKT and RAT make knives that should suit your fixed blade criteria.
 
the basic spyderco endura 4 is one of the best all around folders around.
there is also the new spyderco stretch 2 in frn which looks to be even better than the endura.

the endura may not look special, but its tough, and reliable.

To add to 3mptin3ss' comments, what I like about the Endura 4 is the the blade thickness doesn't narrow until just before the very tip making it very strong. Plus the nested liners add handle/pivot strength. It is quite slender, it has good "reach" at ~4" blade length and I love VG-10 steel. That said, I'd like to replace my FRN Endura 4 with the G-10 version mostly due to the full flat grind as opposed to the saber grind of the FRN versions.
