Need help choosing a Randall

I pulled it out from storage, didn't even remove preservative, already gone back to sleep after picture - as I am posting.

So nice, belongs in the museum - loose handle and all!:

Very nice knife and riveted sheath. It must be pretty old, I like it. From the pic, the knife looks like a model 5?

Vintage around '73. I forgot what model, need to dig up the receipt to verify! :)

Original sheath, I don't even bother to clean corrosion off the rivets, sticky green mess. Shame yea? Shows how much I have lost interest with this brand!

Carbon steel blade w/original edge was well protected, years ago, with one application of Metalophilic, I kept it in the sheath. Sometimes, I wipe residue off the blade if I was to fondle the knife for awhile, after, I put it back into the sheath. Then, whenever I take the blade out, whatever from the sheath is again, deposited/covered up the blade - but with no ill effects!

I don't sell any of my "stuffs" and it is indeed sad, but sheath was well built - but then, like the Randall, it was never field tested. :)

I will try to help answer your question SALMOTRUTTA, BUY BOTH . :-)

The upswept point of #3 helps when you are pulling the hide back on the deer/elk. The #5 works better when you first start field dressing the game, cutting open the paunch. I use a model 3 and a model 7. I really prefer the model 7. .Same knife but a thinner blade. It is easier to get razor sharp and works pretty good on fish too. My wife doesn't hunt but camps and fishes with me. She likes the model 5 because it has a straighter blade. It's funny after all the 50 some Randall wall hangers, I am down to two blades. The model 3 & 7. I do sneak a peak at the model 5 though. :-) I will never live long enough to wear them out. The others are gone, and I really don't miss them. At 66 years old "using" is more important than collecting. Life is short and who needs junk for the wife to dispose of when I'm dead.

Thanks for the input. I've had a few others tell me that, for my purposes, the Model 7 would be the way to go. Now its a matter of deciding leather vs stag, and finding the knife!

Glad I can help. My model 3 is leather. It is my knock around user. Leather did shrink after getting it wet numerous times. Leather is tougher than stag, doesen't crack. I like stag when it is cold out. The stag is warmer in the hand and looks good on a knife. Stag has a better grip with blood and fish slime.

I'm looking for a general use knife for hiking, camping, trout fishing.

I use my #5-5 for the exact three activities you listed, but you can't go wrong with a #3-5 or a #5-5. The only real difference is the tip is a little higher on the #3 and that is why I selected the #5-5 for general use. It can pretty much handle any outdoor activity without being too big or too small. Another 4" blade option is the #5-4, but it is not available with a leather handle.

Here's my #5-5...

I ended up ordering a #7-5" with tool steel, leather handle, brass guard, thong hole. I think it will suit my purposes. Thanks for the advice.

Now begins the saving and waiting.

Bit of a late response but just joined this forum. I have several Randall knifes (Model 3, 5, 25, 22, 15, 28) and out all these knives the absolute best one for me would be the model 28 Woodsman. This knife is a full tang blade and just a bit under 5". For outdoor purposes this is the perfect knife, well balanced and not too long. Anything over 5" is generally too big for generall outdoor use. Even though you have already ordered your knife you normally can still change the model easiliy. If you decide to stick with your choise I would definately recommend to order the sheath without the honing stone. You'll never use this stone because of the poor quality which would destroy the edge of your blade and the pocket just gets in the way.

Enjoy you knife!
