Need help choosing some gear (Firesteel and sleeping bag)

I agree Matthew, while it looks great I don't think I would spend that much money on it. The light my fire is most likely what I'm going to go with since it's easily accessible and fairly priced. The BIC lighter is always my go to fire starter but I like to have a "flint and steel" fire option because my friends are easily impressed by me lighting fire with sparks. My current Firesteel is a cheap crappy one that came in the sheath of a certain knife I bought a couple years ago..

another great thing about MEC is that you can rent some of their gear if you want to try before you buy. I own so much MEC stuff its insane, and I've been very happy with all of it. The MEC brand stuff is designed by them (there have been a few products that weren't but they've been dropped) Its generally heavier than the other brands, but much cheaper. They also don't change designs just for fun, generally stuff stays in production for a long time, which means you can get spares and such.

I've been checking them out and they've got lots of gear I want but they don't have a sleeping bag I want, maybe they'll update soon with more warm weather sleeping bags

I have a Coghlan's one and I'm not to impressed with it, the rod came out of the handle and even before that happened it didn't throw too much sparks.

Practice until you are good with the cheap Coghlan's. Then keep a few ''Light my Fires'' around in case of a real tough spot. Cover the keepers in liquid silicone, then when dry, push a chunk of clear fuel line over it. Breakage resistant and should be impervious to corrosion for as long as you'll ever need it. I have this set up on my key set. Lighters are cheap, keep a bunch all over the place, and one in each chest pocket when going out of town. I have been in a few spots were pizzing around with rods could get me killed. Lighters are faster, keep the rods as back up. I spent years in the northern Saskatchewan Boreal and used lighters because -40 is -40.

Yeah, as a smoker I always have at least two bic lighters on me, when I'm out I have a couple extra. I can light a fire with the cohglans but I just want something better, I don't like the quality of it. The scraper sucks an the handle fell off before I could wear off that outer layer of black. I like the size of it though.

I bought the Bear Grylls ultimate survival knife a couple years ago (before I found this forum T_T) and it's ferro rod, while smaller, worked better. That rod is almost worn out now from practicing lighting fires with it though and I'm hoping to "retire" that knife for something better. Basically I want to upgrade my gear to some higher quality gear.

You should buy the "light my fire" Morakniv. That fixes your knife and ferro problem in one.

Use your heavy tools for wood processing. No need to baton the Mora

PS, I don't hate the bear grylls knife, its just blade steel and Mainly those serrations that keep me from owning one. If it were serrated on front and plain at the base, I'd probably own one too

I don't mind the serrations on my knife and it's still good enough for me to last this season. I ordered a kukri so the bg won't be getting as much use. Personally I like full tang knives so when I replace the BG knife it will be with a full tang knife. Thr new knife won't have serrations neither... I don't mind them but would prefer a straight edge.
