ok fellow kershaw nuts, time to offer up some help. im turning 18 this week and am looking to treat myself to a new kershaw. i will only have so much money, about $60.

here are the kershaws on my list that will most likely fit into my budget (gotta love the knife shop discount).

JDY and JDYII

Baby Boa

Mini Mojito (Mojo, w/e)

Lahar.

the lahar is really cutting it close, i wont know the actual price until i call them on monday. im betting on it being $60 or so.

here is my best guess at price for each

JDY and JDYII = $40 - $50

Baby Boa = $30 - $40

Mini Mojo = $40 - $50

Lahar = $50-$70

i will post the prices when i get them. so guys, here is my delema. i want them all, but can only get one. suggestions? i will post which one i get friday night saturday morning.

thanks for the help

Knowing how much you like the offset (big) I would recommend either the JYDII or the Lahar, they are both awesome !! Also I would recommend them in that order.

Dave

I have them all except the Lahar. The Baby Boa is so small it is almost useless, but it is a marvel of engineering and a nice show piece. I would have a hard time picking between the Mojo and the JYD II both are great knives. If big is what you are looking for then the JYD is right up your alley but, if you like the recurve blade and are looking for a comfortable EDC go Mojo. It gets even harder when you factor in the all black JYD II. Good luck making a hard decision.

thanks guys. i do have a question for Thomas. in the catalog it says that the baby boa and mini mojo have the new steel (13c26). do all the 07 models have the new steel or are you guys at Kershaw still looking to upgrade/finsih upgrading them like you are with the leeks?

dave, i am leaning towards the lahar. if i cant afford it, then the JDYII is going to be moving up on the list.

im going to call them now and see about prices

crap. this just got harder.

here are their prices

JDY = $33.73

JDYII = $44.98

Mini Mojo = $38.99

Baby Boa = $43.56

Lahar = $56.22

HELP! PRICES TO GOOD!

I'd dig around in the couch for a few more pennies and get the JYD I and the Mojo both. double your pleasure double your fun.

My son turns 18 on the 19th...I've been thinking about getting him a Mojo. I don't have one myself but if I like his enough I'll probably be getting one. But as you said, you were leaning towards the Lahar and it does fit your budget...so go with the one you think you will be most pleased with. I'm sure you want be disappointed with any on your list other then "maybe" the Baby Boa. It really is a small knife once you get it in your hands and try and use it. Don't get me wrong...it is a wonderful little knife...just a bit tad to small as an EDC for me personally. Which ever one you get...make sure you get back to us and let us know how you like it.

cool. im the 20th. i really like the Lahar because of the VG10 steel. the looks are good too. the baby boa and mojo are both cool looking but dont have the best steel. i will play around with them all and, of course, get back to all you guys with what i choose. i played with the baby boa at a knife show a few months back. i doubt that i will use it as a EDC (open its as long as one of my fingers). its the JDY's that i havnt played with yet, or the Lahar. the mini mojo is a good "size". the stud lock is a bit annoying with my large hands. havnt played with it enough to get used to it.

so the lahar is the new flipper tech along with the JYD's, while the Baby boa and mojo are speed safe? hey kneedeep, or anyone who has the lahar, how smooth are the thumb studs on the lahar when opening?

Hope all those July birthdays are great! My birthday was the 15th.
I guess what you have to ask yourself is what do I really want this knife for?
If the knife is meant to be meant an EDC that will be used a lot, how big a knife will you be comfortable pulling out in front of people? This is one area that the Mini Mojo/Mojito really excels, it's big enough to be useful, but doesn't really raise many eyebrows. The JYD comes in second from your list, it is noticeably bigger, but people seem to take it less seriously than a similarly sized knife due to the markings.

On the other hand, if you just want it to be a another great knife for your collection, it's hard to argue with the Lahar (don't have a JYD II).

I'm assuming you are asking how well the Lahar opens with the studs instead of the flipper. It took less practice for me to consistently open it with the studs than the flipper. Once you break free of the detent, the blade launches pretty well and doesn't need you to follow through.

first, happy late birthday kneedeep! second, im looking for a combo of great knife for the collection and EDC.

thanks for the info on the studs. sounds like its very "flickable".

you all have until thursday night to sell me on one of them. so talk it up!

I love the Mini Mojo, it's a great small knife, but knowing that the blade steel is about to be updated and working with a limited budget, I might wait until it ships as the Mini Mojoto with the 13C26 blade to get one.

I think the best bet right now might be the Lahar or the JYD II (depending on how you might feel about the upcoming all black version).
With the Lahar you'll be getting a fairly limited production knife in a steel (VG-10) you don't get to play with every day.

If your shop has the Lahar and JYD II in stock, you should try both an go with whichever is more comfortable.

On the other hand Spiral's suggestion of getting both the JYD and the Mojo is a great one, after all more is better right?

well the beauty of it being on my birthday that im going shopping is that i will have some bd money to play with too. my budget may be increased a bit. not sure by how much though. spiral's suggestion is a good one i agree. i will play with all 5 of them and see what works best. your pics have all but sold me on the Lahar btw. if i have enough i will prolly go with spiral's suggestion, but go with the baby boa. sad reason, but i think its too cute to pass up and besides, the lahar can do w/e i need to do anyway.

i guess that means im sold on the lahar lol. well 90% anyway. im sure it'll feel great in the hand.

yes ive heard about the all black JYDII and it sounds interesting. i forget where i saw its pic though. im not 100% sold on the design, but i am intrigued enough to take a look at it, especially after all of the reviews ive read on it. so we'll see. a speed bump could get tossed in the mix if i dont like the JYD in person. got test drive em first. ( i wonder. do knives have new knife smell? like cars have new car smell?)

boy am i indecisive!

" ( i wonder. do knives have new knife smell? like cars have new car smell?)"

Oh yes they do and it's sooooo lovely lol. Well...happy birthday to all the July guys here. What ever knife/knives you choose.......it's a Kershaw and you can't go wrong with that choice!! Best knives out there IMHO and top notch customer service to boot!!

I have the same problem Offset JYD II, Lahar, or maybe a Speedbump.

Have a litle extra money, which doesnt happen often :(
Been collecting mainly Onions, but kinda like they JYD and Lahar...decisions decisons, lol

Leaning toward the JYDII, We'll see after I handle them this weekend, I'll let ya know what I went with

i decided to do a vote tally of what you guys suggested (you all have these knives so it does give some credability to it) and here are the results so far

JDYII = 4

JDY = 3

Baby Boa = 1 (thats me. i think its cute)

Mini Mojo = 3

Speed bump = 1 (outside shot if i dont like the JDY's)

Lahar = 4
