Need help deciding an EDC

I am new here, but not new to collecting or (old) knives. I primarily collect militaria but like quality guns and knives. I am not up to speed on new mfg knives and I'm looking for a good edc in the 2 3/4" - 3" blade range. Two that have caught my attention.

1.Great Eastern Cutlery's (Tidioute) Cody Scout. (1095)
2. Ritter mini griptilian in m390

I know they are vastly different and I may eventually get both but any input on these blades? GEC is local for me, so I like the idea of supporting them. Thanks in advance.

Both of those knives would make a good EDC. You have to decide what you're looking for.

If you're looking for a modern one hand opening knife, the grip is a good choice. (I personally hate them though. The plastic handle feels cheapo to me.)

If you're looking for a nice traditional knife, they don't get any nicer than a GEC. I have a GEC #23 pattern in my right front pocket as I type this. It's the big brother of the Cody scout. It's considered HUGE for a traditional knife, but I still manage to carry it every day, easily.

This is one choice you'll have to make on your own. They're just two completely different directions. Good luck no matter what you decide.

I really like the traditional look of the GEC, but the one hand use of the BM. I have heard really good things about the m390, but also a few bad. Again I'll probably end up with a GEC and BM both at some point. Is there any other BM in that price range that would be considered better? I have never owned or operated an axis lock, that's my main hesitant.
Thanks again for the advice.

No worries with the axis lock. Very easy to operate, and pretty trouble free. With M390, the only problem you might run into is that it can be hard to sharpen, depending on your sharpening setup.

If I was to recommend another Benchmade, it would have to be the 710. It was one of my all-time favorite knives for a good long while.

If you've got both of these knives on your radar, you'll most likely wind up with both. That's a good thing. They're both great knives.

Thanks for the quick replies, I have a sharpmaker, whetstones, and some Smith cheapies, someday I'll need to get a diamond stone... Looks like I'll be grabbing the BM first.

Another beloved BM is the 930. The 710 like AntDog suggested is another great suggestion.

Mini grip Doug Ritter has been my personal choice
Very good EDC with very good steel
M390 re-sharpens easily on my spyderco sharpmaker

I have a Ritter Mini Grip M390 - sweet knife.

The Axis lock is no problem and quite fun to operate Indeed, repeated flicking an axis is quite therapeutic and there are plenty of Youtube vids on its use and even performing 'tricks'. ;)

I am a big fan of traditional style knives. I have a number of GECs in my collection. Between the two you listed, unless you just dislike modern knives, the Ritter Mini Grip is the one I would choose. I have a regular BM Mini Grip with the thumbhole and sheepsfoot blade. I love the axis lock.

I basically always have a modern one hander in my right pocket and a traditional at the bottom of my left. So I say both :)

Mini grip is a great place to start with modern folders. A very practical and great all arounder, and M390 is also arguably the best all around modern steel... just don't let it get too dull and touch ups on the Sharpmaker are easy.

Welcome to the forum, AK!!

Value for the money, I still like and carry the ZT450 most of the time. I still carry mine when most others are in the knife case or have been sold off after a short stint of carrying.

My other favorites:
Southard AVO (for a bigger knife blade in as small a handle as you can get)
Chris Reeve Insingo (Chris got all my needs met in this knife, except that I prefer a flipper and this is a thumb deployed design)
LionSteel TRE (As small a knife as I like in a flipper. Some have too light a detent, but have to ask seller what the detent is like on the one they are selling)
LionSteel TiSpine (Moletta and Robert Young Pelton knocked this design out of the park! Love everything about this one. I have 3!)
Boker Plus Urban Trapper (Inexpensive and the 3.42" blade doesn't bother me as the knife is super slim design and disappears in the pocket for the easiest carrying knife I own. Brad Zinker did a fabulous job designing this one and the boker version is 10% the cost of Brad's branded model. I can't tell the difference when comparing both side by side)

Cheers,

For an EDC, the grip, for fun and because its awesome/classic (and local for you) GEC. Get both starting with the grip!

If you go with the GEC you'll have some real trouble as I've never heard of anyone who could have just one.

I don't have the Mini but my full size Griptillian is one of if not thee most satisfying knives I own.
Surprised me how :
  • smooth and functional open and close
  • blade /grind/ thinness cuts VERY WELL !
  • blade steel M390 / longer wearing than anything else I have and I haven't skimped in that department / great to sharpen
  • I really like the stock fat grip (don't let it fool you it is plenty durable and not just cheep "plastic")
  • clip works well for me.

Thanks Gents, placing an order for the BM, then I will be taking a trip to GEC to see a few of their knives in hand before I pull the trigger on the scout. Case is nearby too, but I never really cared much for their knives, just the zippos!

I find my GECs to be much nicer than my Case knives. In basically all respects :)
