The two steels, O1 and O2, are extremely close to each other. I doubt anyone could tell the two apart without examining it with SEM or whatever. As mentioned by mycough, O1 has tungsten in it. Not a whole lot, but it aids in wear resistance. O2 does not have it. Also O2 usually is a bit higher in Mn count, making it slightly deeper hardening than O1, and provides a very very "dark" steel in damascus. O2 technically might have smaller grain size, but that's splitting hairs. O1 has extremely fine grain in it as well. Personally I prefer the Tungsten in O1.
