Need Help! First rifle advice

Great gun, go for it. And move to a state that doesnt screw over its residents. LOL. Seriously though RRA makes awesome products that you will be proud to own

Workin on it, requested a transfer to CO. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Im a fan of the mid-length gas system. and the new half quad rail is really nice running full length across the top. allows for tons of mounting options for optics.

S&W 15-22. It's inexpensive, accurate, .22 ammo is dirt cheap, and it has the exact ergos as a real AR.

Hi Kurtz265 -

I am putting together an AR-15 for my use in coyote/varmint hunting and short range target practice (50-100 yards).

I have decided in the Rock River lower with two-stage trigger (AR0990CX $395), and a White Oak Armament Varmint upper with 20" 1 in 12 twist barrel (2vu1 $595).

I am also opting for a EOTech XPS2-0 holographic sight - I just like the way those sights work for me - they are spendy ($500 at retail).

My total will be around $1500 if I have to pay full retail for the three components, but I expect to get a little group discount as a friend of mine is also going for the same package with me, having let me do the leg work.

Good luck with your quest and please post pictures of your piece when you get it.

best regards -

Double check with Pete at ar15sales.com and see what he can do price wise on that rifle. Shoot him an email telling him exactly what you want.

Ordering straight from RRA might be a good deal if they're running a promo, but other than that you'll generally save buying from a retailer. I just checked a couple places and they're all within a couple bucks of ordering straight from RRA and you won't have to wait 45 days.

Other than that, if that's the rifle you've decided on I think you'll be very happy with it. Welcome to the black rifle disease. Oh and the "1 AR" thing. Good luck with that! :D My wife is more than happy to support my ESEE blade hobby. You can buy a lot of knives for the price of a completed AR project!

Check out M4carbine forums lots of great info there. That said, I own a spikes tactical and a colt . I perfer my spikes all day long... For the price it can't be touched. Some people don't like spikes for reasons unknown if not spikes I'd go bravo company there great also I got my mod 4 charging handle front them.

Also the going price for a LEO m4 is about 7-800 g2g so for price vs quality spikes wins for me

Great thing about the AR is that you can swap uppers, so the wife technically can't say you have more than one!! "Look, there's only one FFL registration"

I have had a 16" RRA CAR A4 for about 5 years now and never had a problem. Not top tier equipment like Colt, Novorske, Daniel Defense, etc and of course not the price either but it is perfect for my needs. I have it set up for target and coyote hunting. My next build will be a mid length gas system.

Do some research for the complete upper and lower parts. Buy the receiver locally and have the other items sent directly to your front door. Assemble the lower parts kit and stock yourself. It is easier than you think. I recommend this because when you buy a complete rifle there is a 11% tax (included in the price you pay) which goes directly to the government. Based on the price shown by RRA, you could build your own for $890 or cheaper. Use the difference in cost on mags and ammo.

Check out Bravo Company and Spikes if you buy the separate assemblies to see if they have anything that fits your needs.

Adaman- I gave Pete a call on you recommendation- thanks!
He came within 40 bucks of the price so I probably wont cancel the order for that- BUT he also said in general he hasnt seen a rifle like this at such a competitive price in 15 years or more, so that made my pretty happy.

i bought a rock river in 2003. mid length od green. shot a documented 3500 plus rounds thru it. No jams. use it for 3 gun and such. I think you are making an informed choice. Might I recommend an Esse 3 to go along with your AR?
good shooting,
John

If you're completely new to AR's, don't buy anything fancy - you can always swap out parts later (that's the beauty of the AR, after all). Just get an entry-level rifle from one of the name brand manufacturers.

A complete rifle is probably the best route for a beginner, but I also agree with what the others said about building your own - buy the lower locally and then shop DPMS, Bushmaster, or one of the other "higher end" AR companies for parts. Pretty simple to piece together yourself, and a lot of it is available in kit form.

All that matters is that you like it. It's built buy a good company it's like anything else you can find reasons to love the company or hate em. I have looked at several rra's that if could justify another one that I wouldn't mind purchasing. For the money you cannot beat some of the models that spikes tactical makes and there customer service is far better then any othe gun manufacture I have dealt with. Nice thing about spikes moat of there parts meet and exceed milspec, plus all the extra quality control and testing most companies don't offer. There a fun gun and just as addicting as the esee knives with lots of ways to customize em. Enjoy you future gun and at least ammo is comming down a little for them too.

2 names come to mind for me.

Spikes and BCM

get a carbine or a mid length gas system in 16in 1/7 twist and you will be good to go
also check smartgunner .... they have some good deals running right now.

LMT. Noveske, or Colt. Buy the most basic model available, and upgrade it your way after you do your research. RRA is good, but most probably you going to end up gettin' one of the 3 latter anyway.

For a midlength, in the price range you had alluded to, I would recommend BCM. Order a basic lower from G&R Tactical at $340 and the upper from G&R or BCM, which is complete sans a BUIS and should come in at around $550. If you could spring for a little more, the BCM cold hammer forged barrel is an option.

I, at one time did own a RRA midlength, back when they were first released and got rid of it after a couple of months. I did not have any problems with it, I just didn't care of the barrel profile or the fact that the M4 feed ramps were machined out of the receiver post anodizing.

I don't know what profile the Operator comes with, but I can tell you that the profile that came with my rifle (not sure if it is what RRA now refers to as medium weight or heavy weight) made the rifle a pig to shoot and carry. Also, as far as the barrel is concerned, I would take a look at the front sight base. If memory serves me correctly, the particular front sight base is secured using set screws. Many would disagree with me, but I prefer an exposed front sight base to be pinned to the barrel.

Finally, on my rifle, there was no staking on the gas key, which is easily remedied. Not sure if RRA has changed the manner in which they assemble the bolt carrier group, but it is something to be on the look out for.

Like I said earlier, I would encourage you to take a look at a BCM rifle. For about the same price, you will get a more basic set up, but it will be an outstanding rifle to start with. I say this because if experience is any indication, you will most likely end up experimenting with many of the components like the grip, stock, and handguards.

RRAs are ok, but if you shop, you can get better for around the same $. Look at Daniel Defense, and BCM.

There's a huge debate between which is better, Carbine or Mid-length gas systems. Bottom line is, if they are quality built, both will probably outlast you.

tip: you can get a ceiner .22 conversion kit for it to save ammo money. also, most indoor ranges allow a .22 rifle but not a full blown one.

You can buy a lot of knives for the price of a completed AR project!

yup! thankfully, i came from the ar-15/1911 world to knives and not the other way around. i got the opposite of the usual sticker shock...i'm shocked at how many knives i can buy for a typical range trip ammo money

Some people don't like spikes for reasons unknown if not spikes I'd go bravo company there great also I got my mod 4 charging handle front them.

my beef with spikes is that he raised his stripped receiver's price by a lot right after obama was announced the official winner. supply vs. demand, free market, etc. is all fine by me but his move was borderline, if it didn't cross it, price-gouging. no other maker raised their prices, only him and by a lot! it was insult to injury given the buying spree of ammo all those months too.

spikes and cheaper than dirt are on my black list. anyway, you can search arfcom for it.
