Hey guys,

What do i have here?. It's an old Gerber folder i THINK i picked up in a trade 20-30 years ago.

The odd thing is where you depress it to release the lock. It's hard to explain. Look at the first pic to see what I mean.

Any info, or even "best guesses" will be appreciated. I'm completely in the dark about this one.

Thanks

I just took a look at Blade's Guide to Knives and Their Values (7th Edition), and your knife is the Folding Sportsman. I think it's the Folding Sportsman II (there was the I, II, and III, with a bunch of variations of each). The II in stag was produced from 1974 to 1985.

If its about a 4 inch handle, I thinks it's called a "Sportsman maybe(FS2)/ or something very close to that . Don't know much more about it than that, but I have seen them before.

I see I'm a bit late with my info.

Brancon and oddblade,

Thanks. After you guys pointed me in the right direction, i found quite a few online pics, i too think it is a Sportsman ll, stag handles.

It's really a very solid, well made knife. It's still tighter than a drum. No horizontal or vertical wiggle and locks up great.

Brancon, does your ref. book give you a value? If i cleaned it up, it would be mint and it has the original sheath.

Thanks

With all due respect, the knife in those photos is not mint, and never will be again. There are obvious scratches on the blade, just for starters.

The lock release is pressing down on the metal at the top rear of the scales (handle) where the cutout is. It's a standard lockback knife - or if it isn't, it sure looks like one!

Unfortunately no, it doesn't give any values for this model. If I were you, I'd Google around, searching for various combinations of Gerber, Folding Sportsman, FS, II, 2, and stag. You will probably find some listings and some more information. It looks like a nice knife, though.

Gerber's older stuff was up there in quality. I recently picked up this LST, made around 1981 or so, and it's beautifully made: https://instagram.com/p/BAf_T1Yx9Wz/

"Mint" or not, brancron is right, Gerber was good quality back then and it's a nice looking knife.
Good luck with whatever you choose do do with it.

:D RJE,

You're right. It's not mint AND NEVER WILL BE AGAIN. But thank you for sharing in the joy of my finding this nice old knife. :D

An extremelay light buffing will make those slight, surface scratches disappear.

And tell me about that lock again. I found a few pics of the same model and they too have that space under the bar and are situated identically to mine.

Did you see anything wrong with the sheath? It's old too. There has to be something wrong with it.

You're a real peach, pal. Thanks for your input.

Thanks

Thank you, OddBlade. I was, and still am, glad i found it.

And not mentioning any names, but it seems there's always at least one at every party.

It's just a standard lockback, same as the best there ever was the buck 110, case mako, Gerber gator, and spyderco's . I really like the look of the knife, but it kinda sucks that they had to leave the scales really fat to avoid polishing of the stay.

Love those chunky stag scales. A nice looking old Gerber for sure. Thanks for sharing the pics.:cool:

Yeah, it ain't nuffin but a standard ol' lockback with some way too fat scales. I guess i'll just throw it away unless one of you guys wants it.
