A collegue of mine is retiring and I would like to purchase as a gift a knife for her. Here is the rub: she is really into woodwork (you know like making decoys and animals, etc) and I would like to purchase a knife that she would immediately recognize as something special. I know this is not much to go on, but are there any general recommendations on type and brand that you could share with me? Thanks in advance for any advice.

A custom made Whittler pattern would be a good start. High end Tony Bose, mid-level Halfritch or Ohta, or whatever. You could also look for one of the 2005 Case/Bose collaberation knives. Check eBay. Even a regular whittler pattern is good; my EDC is a Seahorse Whittler with ivory scales.

With lower price I think you could get her a Queen knife.
traditional look, good D2 steel, pointy blade for wood whitling...
Or you can get her a spyderco. Like the delica. the unique looks of the spydie hole and leaf blade shape will remind her every single time she deploys the blade ;)
