Need help loving Spyderco

Spyderco is a pioneer in knives. The first time I handled an endura, first spyderco I'd seen, I was 16yo in the early 90s.
My buddies older brother was a Nevada Highway patrolman and showed us his new work knife . I couldn't believe how different this was at the time. Now everyone has copied it.
At any rate I've carried spydercos on and off for 20+yrs and never been disappointed. And often been blown away. I ALWAYS recommend the delica or endura to any friends who ask about a good quality affordable knife. They always thank me and are thrilled weeks later .
My wife insisted she don't need a knife. I bought her a Dragonfly Tattoo SS couple Christmas ago and it is now a fixture in her purse.
There are alot of great knives out there. Spydercos are of a very high quality and value. Try one, if you don't like it sell it to one of us.
But I'd bet you'll keep it.

Why should you need help loving Spyderco? If you don't have one and you are curious, try one out. If you don't like it try another type of knife. Plenty of knives out there for everyone.

I've tried a few before, but never really got into them. I never liked that giant hole in the blade. But to each their own. Some people would rather have them than anything else.

So based on some pictures of a product you feel it isn't quality because it will not perform a task for which it was never designed? Makes sense. That's like saying this screwdriver sucks because it's lousy as a hammer. Use the right tool for the job and judge its performance on how it performs the task for which it was designed. Spyderco's are made to cut/slice. They are designed for your hand, not your eye. If you don't get that then maybe they aren't for you.

It's actually worse. Not only is he deciding that the screwdriver sucks as a hammer, but hes basing this judgement solely on a picture he's seen of said screwdriver.....

See I don't like thumb studs and despise flippers so the hole works for me, but the point is there's something for everyone out there.

I'm pretty sure there are 15 year olds on here. This isn't meant to disparage and it isn't meant to be crass. I actually think that I'm reading something a 15 year old may have written......on occasion.

I must admit I've never owned or held a Spyderco but in the few weeks of research online I've done it isn't hard to tell that anyone with blade knowledge considers them to be one of the best if not the best knives out there. I just don't see it though, no I'm not ignorant to the fact that they must be well made with quality steel but they don't look to me that they have the durability I desire. I've gone as far as battoning and chopping down saplings with my folder and cant imagine a Spyderco holding up to too much of that. I have no foothold to talk negatively about the knives, especially since I've read literally hundreds of peoples opinions stating they're basically the best but in my (most likely ignorant) inexperienced opinion they are just glorified box cutters. Perhaps I am just expecting too much out of a folding edc?

So you have never owned or held one but you call them glorified box cutters? Further, you baton with a folder? You must have been in an extreme survival situation when you did that because otherwise that would be foolish.

You also say that you are not ignorant but then say you likely are ignorant?

You seem confused. Not sure if this post is serious.

Here is something to consider - accuracy! Spyderco calls this a CF Dodo, named after a meter tall flightless bird once found on the island of Mauritius, I believe. It's blade shape is patterned after the bird's beak - which reportedly ran 8" - 11" in length. Missed it in scale - the bird being extinct now for over three and a half centuries may have something to do with it. Then there is my wife's cricket - which looks nothing like a cricket. Accuracy?

Of course I am kidding. The CF Dodo is a functional piece of techno-art, from it's S30V blade to it's CF scales to it's innovative ball lock. It makes me feel complete when it's in my pocket. I can open the mail - packages - trim the fat from my ham sandwich - and whittle - sort of! It's not a survival knife, or even something you could effectively protect your bacon with, I prefer legally carried louder implements for that function. Another great pocket knife is the Native5 G10 - S35VN steel. My least favorite folder, a camo ParaMilitary 2, is still a keeper - as is my South Fork fb knife. I wouldn't split limbs with any of them - that's what my Becker BK-2 is for! The right tool for the right job... Get a Spyderco folder and evaluate it for yourself.

I can empathize with the OP. I did not care for the looks of the spyderco and after some time of surfing the forums and hearing all of the positive feedback about them I took the plunge. I was actually sneaky about it, my friend was having a birthday and his partner, knowing I'm into knives asked what knife she could get him for a good all around knife. I suggested the manix 2 because I really liked it and when he got it for his birthday I had the chance to hold it an experience it. I bought one for myself a few months later. The manix 2 with g10 handles is my favorite folder I own. I'm just amazed by how much spyderco gets right. I lubed it up with some machine oil and it flies out when deployed correctly. The choils feel amazing, the weight is dead on, lock up is great, and the one handed closing on the ball lock makes it almost feel like automatic knife with the speed it operates. Also, the manix 2 has g10 and s30v for the price of a mini grip. HUGE value to functionality ratio.

I really have to agree with those naming pictures do not do them justice. If you held one in your hand I'm thinking you may really want to give it a shot. Part of the reason I had to be sneaky about it is there aren't spyderco dealers in my home town so I wasn't able to go to a shop and hold them myself.

I love many brands. Though, whenever I pick up one of my Spydercos I could feel it up and down and stare at it forever. They are built with such elegance and they are sharp like wow. Love them! For beating, I reccomend a fixed blade. They make those too. ;)

I always thought they looked funny... Until I bought my manix2... Now I get it. Buy one, if you don't like it after a few carries you can sell it for a minimal loss on the exchange. You never know if you will like something until you've tried it.. I never thought I'd like Asian girls until I tried it.. You live and you learn.

Going into the chopping thing - and I don't want this thread to get off of topic I promise - You've got the range or folks who a scale from 1 - 10. 1 being thinking you should be able to chop with a folder and 10 being approved tree sized felling axes ONLY for chopping. You gotta rate yourself. For me I want my folder to be a lazer beam, that's what I expect out of it and that's what spyderco does very well. Personally, I really don't chop unless it's at least a hatchet or axe. I don't disrespect people who at all, that's just my personal take away. The you tube video shown shows cutlery lover chopping with an endura, it can be done. My philosophy really just doesn't lend itself to chopping with a folder.

You're using a FOLDER for BATONING... Why?! As Jdavis882 would say, you buy the knife for the blade. That's the part that matters. The lock, no matter how thick or thin, is just so you don't cut your dumbass fingers off.

All else aside (but still valid) if you try a hole in the blade to open your knife you will see how much better than thumb studs they are. Then that hole will not seem ugly any more.

Best way to answer your question is just buy one and make your own conclusions. I would start with an Endura 4 or Delica 4. Soon you will realize what all of the hype is about.

Which Spyderco can I buy that will help me release my maul from a Live Oak stump?

Similar situation for me. I always thought that the Spydercos looked funky. Finally saw the Sage 1 and thought the CF scales looked great. I has some $$ budgeted for a knife purchase, so after some surfing I got off my butt and ordered a Sage 1 and Tenacious (test out as a beater knife). I bought them from AG Russell because I knew if I didn't like them I could return them with out a problem.

No regrets on getting them. I've added a Dragonfly G10, Cat, a couple of Bugs, and a Tern (slippie from the Byrd line).

Take the plunge and try one or two of them. You won't know until you have them in hand.
