hi all. i picked out a bow for christmas, and was looking forward to doing some shooting upon receival on Christmas day. unfortunatly, i jusst realized that the arrows i had (just some cheap target arrows) are a few inches too short for my long-armed draw length (30-31''). so, i will probably check some sproting goods stores tomorrow for some long arrows, but i am not really expecting to find anything. so, to the question, does anyone have any advice on making some arrows for temporary use? the cheaper the better. i would really prefer doing it with just some of the wood in my yard, but if that is not realistic, i could buy some dowels. the fletchings seem like they could be tricky, and i dont know what to use for a head.

the oher option would be to use the arrows that i already have, but modify them to accomidate my long draw. so, any thoughts?

thanks and merry Christmas.

I forget who it was, but someone posted a trick for making an arrow plane a while back. Maybe they'll chime in.

I would STRONGLY suggest you go buy a few arrows from your local chain sporting goods store. You can get a few aluminum ones for a few bucks.

Trying to shoot dowels out of a decent bow could end in injury.

You can look up the correct spine and weight for your draw online.

most bows come measured @ 28 in. draw length... so if you're drawing 30-31 in.. you should add 2-3 pounds per in. you gain/lose...

here is a spine weight chart to check out.. i buy a lot of my arrow making supplies from rose city...

once you figure out what you need, you could also go to
www.3riversarchery.com and buy some of thier basic pre-made wood arrows....

If ones draw length is 28 inches the arrow should be around 32 inches depending on shooting style.

Do not screw around with crappy arrows and always protect your bow holding arm with leather. Having a wooden dowel broken and shot through your arm is not a experience you want to have, and believe me, many a archer has had that experience.

I know these folks, have ordered hundreds of dollars worth of gear from them, they are great resource for starting your own arrowsmithing.

Please do not buy cheap arrows. The risk of injury is way too great. If there is an archery pro shop nearby, take your bow and get measured for arrows. If you can't afford 12, buy 6, if you can't afford 6, buy 3. Gander Mtn. Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro all have pro shops. You can also order arrows on-line.

If you want to support some of the Mom and Pop archery shops try:

www.rmsgear.com - speak with owner Tom, Burt, or Tom's sons Tom and Dan.

www.lostnationarchery.com - speak with Larry

www.kustom-king.com

There is something called a "reparrow" that will lengthen a wood arrow. Try this site:

also try the classifieds at www.stickbow.com

Shoot safe!
