The old file thing is not working well for me at all. So I'm settling in on 1084 from aldo as what I'm going to order to continue my learning experience getting started in knifemaking this winter. I have several gas forges that I use in my horseshoeing business so I am going to be forging the blades and only finishing on the sander.
I'm finding all the various sizes available confusing and not sure what size(s) of stock to order. Could some of the experienced folks here on the forum recommend what size stock would be best for forging some starter projects. My uninformed gut feeling looking at the many sizes aldo has available was an initial order to get started having fun in the forge could be 1/8"X1 for small projects, The 3/16" x 1-1/4 for a bit bigger and perhaps the 1/4" x 1-1/2".
My wanna make em project list includes some small blades in the 2 to 2-1/2" range (neck knive, bird and trout) some utility sized blades in the 3-5" range and I'd like to make a big honking bowie LOL.
Am I on the right track size wise? Steel and shipping ain't cheap so I'd appreciate any advice so I end up ordering the most useful sizes for someone who has a forge to do the typical getting started projects.
Oh I noticed many newbies seem to have a fear of accepting the offer of free stuff. I'll take it! (Raises Hand) LOL
