Need help picking my first splitting axe/maul

Retailer was Barracuda Supply, an Amazon retailer. They're offering a full refund or $20 back to pay for a new sheath. Pretty strongly tempted to just return the thing and get something else elsewhere.

Return it, order another.

the hang and wood grain look fine to me, as long as there isn't too much grain run out i would take the 20$ and the new sheath.

It's $20 for me to go buy myself a new sheath -- and the cheapest I can find 'em online for is $22 + shipping. That's hardly an appealing option.

This guy's going back.

Ordered a replacement through another retailer, one that's closer to me so hopefully the axe won't get as screwed up in transport. Fingers crossed...

It would not be the first time a sheath got cut when the axe/ splitter was bumped into. I suspect that occurred during shipping and the offer to refund the value of the sheath seems fair.
A cheapie sheath came with the Husqvarna maul I just got also. Will have to work on a replacement, good thing being it isn't carried around much. But, even riding in the back of my van the current sheath wont offer much protection to the maul or anyone around it.
It sucks buying blind. The grain isn't horrible- I suspect that is a glue used on the wedge you see rather than epoxy to hold the head on.
good luck with the next one.

Return it! I've had good luck using eBay retailers, actually. One guy i've bought from has hand picked axes for me that are excellent. If I do buy online, especially something like an axe, I always email/message ahead to specify what I want. It looks like the maul came down hard on the sheath at an angle. Unfortunate.

Just as a heads up, Barracuda did offer to send me a new axe, and to "hand pick" it for me, but I'd already ordered from another supplier by then. Axe arrived last week, and has already been put to good use. It's far, far better for splitting than my old felling axe.

Thanks again for all the help!

Just a quick hint. I used to split logs in half and half again and so on. I had a friend of mine who grew up in the backwoods of the Adirondacks show me a trick. First strike on edge of log with half swing. Second strike 3 to4 inches away from previous one however you are only looking to take off a wedge from outside edges. kinda like peeling a banana n work your way around. Really doesn't require full power swings either. Just work around and in. Hope helps good luck

What kind of wood will you be splitting? There's a big difference between white pine and elm. Your profile doesn't say where you live.
