Need help remembering an epoxy

For years I used an epoxy that was sold in a purple and yellow box. The resin and hardener were both very thick, and it made for a bit less sloppy work on full tang knives. I believe it came from one of the major knife supply houses.

But, as happens with age for both epoxy and man, the epoxy hardened in disuse and the arteries harden from overuse. I can't remember what the heck it was and can't find it at any supplier or Amazon. I even checked my saved copy of Sheffield's last catalog. :)

This by chance ring any kind of bell whatsoever to anyone? Thanks so much...

No help remembering, but you might want to look at the new System 3 blade pro, targeted at knife making. I was happy with their T88 product, but just bought some of this one.

Thank you, Richard. that looks interesting with good work and cure times for my pace. I almost ordered some to try, but they wanted $18 to ship 8oz of goo and that tripped the old righteous indignation button.:) Of course, they have a lock on it at AMZ, also. Did you manage to find some that didn't charge shipping equivalent to actual cost? Otherwise, I'll try some as soon as a supply house sells it.

Thanks, again.

I think I took the hit on shipping.
You can still get T88 on AMZ and it's actually more viscous.

The box colour doesn't match, but I remember folk using Acraglas for full tangs, saying it was much thicker and easier to spread around.

Thanks! Acraglas is my next choice, and, yes, it works well. There are plenty of fine epoxies, and I probably ought to get that old stuff out of my head. That said, getting used to forgetting stuff with age seems to come with a dose of need to get the answer, too, at least for me.
As much as I’ve looked, I’d darn well better get used to not having it, regardless the name. LOL

Ha, I back doored my memory! Talking about the stuff with the missus, I remembered the little mixing boards that came in the box. <light blinks on> I check the box of adhesives, and lo and behold, turned around, there are mixing boards with the name on it: Conap Easypoxy. Conap appears to be around, still.
Simple pleasures!

I've used Acra Glas exclusively for 10 years, and it had always been great until the last batch I got. I noticed it was drying milky white instead of yellowish clear. I always did strength tests with my cup of extra epoxy from each batch and it always performed well. The new stuff does not have anywhere near the strength of the old stuff. I called tech support at Brownells and the nice rep told me they were assured Acra Glass had not changed by the factory, but he said they knew it had. He said they have gotten several complaints. They are allowing me to return my unused portion for a refund. I've ordered G Flex and will likely be using that from now on. It's really a shame , Acra Glass was a great product.

Damnnn, thanks for that info. No Acraglas, then. Bad batch is one thing; forrmulation change needs re-approval but didn't pass muster. End of relationship, for sure. thanks.

Note to Brownell's in case you're reading :) : I'm about 5 weeks into waiting for my print catalog after you supposedly sent it the second time after I waited 8 weeks the first time for a no show. Still nothing. You used to be better. I paid plenty for what should come free. Bite me.

I'm not saying it isn't just a bad batch. The rep told me the factory swore nothing had changed, but lots of things can change in the supply chain. I don't believe Brownells made or authorized any changes, but are instead a victim like us. They are definitely going to hear it when barrel lug beddings start to break.

Hahaha. I can not tell you often I have heard the statement “nothing changed” when all of a sudden something stops working like it was supposed to. (Half of my career was based in identifying just went wrong, and fixing it). Something changed ... they just don’t know what it is, and they are not controlling or testing it. (Like ... what about the concept of testing completed batches before selling them to customers?)

How concise and perfect a description! Having spent many years doing process troubleshooting in Pharma and tracking downed the darnedest, "Nothing changed" lines of BS, it just made me smile in remembrance of things not missed in retirement. Thanks for the smile, sir!

And, J. Hoffman J. Hoffman . Apologies if what I wrote appeared to you to put words in your mouth. Not my intention.

No apology needed. I got the feeling the rep at Brownells was just as frustrated.

Like someone said it was Conap epoxy. That was a long time ago they changed the color of their box to white and blue. I used to use Conap and really liked it but the price went up and up. I now use West System and like it a lot.

Hey Tom, which West System are you using? Something special or just the standard base and 109 hardener?

Are you folks who use West Systems making hidden tang knives? I ask because West Systems came up here some years back and I went down to the marina and grabbed what they described as a sample size. May even have been a "repair kit", I get a vague memory. It was very thin, IIRC, and I had a difficult time with it running out the guard end as I poured into the cavity in the piece of stag from the pommel end.
Anyone have a tip? Wait until it starts to set up and go like hell? :)
I bought a kit of long-set stuff from Mickley and that stuff looks intimidatingly thin to me.

I use the West Systems 105 resin. When I want it thicker, I add 406 colloidal silica to thicken it. I've made a bunch of hidden tang kitchen knives with it and have not had any issues.
