NEED HELP...S30V or VG-10

Just got my Endura 4 (black FRN plain edge VG-10) in the mail from New Graham today, and I love it...slim, sleek, with a little weight to make it ever so beefy...just right!!

And it is hair shaving sharp, with a great edge profile as well.

Enjoy the Endura. It is a classic by now and well deserved. One of my all time favorite folders , love it in any flavor and I hope they never stop making it.

I've always like the Endura. Like someone said, classic Spyderco.

My experience with ZDP is also that it stains rather easily (if it is not high polished). For eg., my reground ZDP will stain if clipped to my pocket on a rainy day. On my Caly 3, the polished portion on the flats of the blade doesn't stain, but the spine (core, ie. the ZDP portion) which is more of a low grit satin finish will show rust spots.

I've always like VG10 but I do agree that ZDP holds an edge marginally better. VG10 blades can take a very scary sharp edge.

I agree. I noticed staining with ZDP-189 as well. I had rust on my edge as well.

ZDP may hold an edge better than VG-10 but it was not all that impressive to me. For the price and the other drawbacks of ZDP, it is not worth it to me.

There are many times that I actually prefer a softer steel. In fact, I like softer steels for hard use as they are less likely to chip or break.

I hate to rain on your parade, but the polished flats on your Caly3 are made of 420J, which is a lot more corrosion resistant than ZDP-189.

I have had ZDP rust as well, but if I can carry a carbon steel stockman, I can deal with a little ZDP oxide.

Here are a couple of side-by-side pictures for comparison. The Endura is a ZDP-189 flat ground by Tom Krein. The knife and regrind together cost about as much as the Manix, and that sucker cuts like a demon.

Man, why doesn't Spyderco just sell us the flat grind Delicas and Enduras from the factory. That Endura looks awesome.

That flat ground Endura actually looks a lot like the Calypso that only lasted one run. We knife knuts may love our flat grinds, but the general public doesn't seem to concur.

the ZDP below the lamination line is also slightly polished, as compared to the spine. the lamination line leaves about 1/4" of ZDP exposed. that part hasn't stained or rusted. However, I did notice that a buddy's ZDP Endura (not reground) but in its original form showed staining. It's not deep pitting rust, just surface staining, which can be removed by flitz / autosol or WD40 or other contact cleaners.

Thank you for clarifying that. I agree that the more polished the finish, the less rust you are likely to get. If nothing else, a high polish means less surface area exposed to the elements, a rough finish can effectively double the surface area, as well as making places to trap moisture, giving it more time to work.

Overall, I find ZDP to be less rust resistant than VG-10 or S30V, but more resistant than D2.
