So i had just gotten my new paper wheels and decided i was a pro after sharpening one beater blade, so i took my plain jane 21 to the grit wheel to try and get rid of a bad nick on the spine that happened from a fall onto the concrete. I screwed up and wound up rounding the tip and creating a semi "swedge" kinda like an umnumzaan.

So my question is what should i do? Leave it as is, or send it to crk to get a new blade for 130$? Im really upset i screwed it up, heres some pics, what would you guys do?

It looks like you could just lower and reprofile the back side of the blade a touch. If you have the means, or know someone who does, it may be worth a shot before spending the $130 and a month without the knife.

I would run it some and see if you forget about it. It's like when you get a ding in your car you want to take it to the body shop. After a while you won't even notice the ding.

Tried lowering the backside and now its got some flat spots on the rounded crown. Just sucks because the tip is rounded off now which is why i love the 21 for its pointy tip :( . It justs sucks paying 130$ and over a month without the knife ontop of it costing over 400 for the knife. the whole knife is really beat to hell though and could use a spa treatment desperately.

Either live with it or send it in to CRK or any of the established knifemakers here to see if they can put a clip point on it. Not sure if CRK still does this..but it's not difficult (send it to someone to do)

I put a clip point on my brothers Sebenza when he broke the very tip off of the blade. It was hard to tell anything happened to it.

Put away the paper wheels..I think they are a good tool for kitchen knives,..but would rather not take them to my folding knives of any value.

Yea im done with the paper grit wheel. The polishing wheel works fantastic for quick touch ups instead of stropping, but no more grit wheel for me :( . Guess ill just send it back for a new blade, and keep this one as a spare.

Seriously consider putting the swedge on it. (I called it clipping- A term I use often when machining)
It's a good way to save it. Think of what the Umnumzaan looks like with the false edge on top..that's what I am talking about.

Do what you want,..it's your $

I would love a swedge, i just dont trust myself to do it. My umnum is my #1 favorite knife of all time.

I would second the option to put on a swedge! There are people in the craftsman section that can help you out:thumbup: in my option, getting a new blade would be a last resort.

No, definitely do not do it yourself. CRK used to do this...and may consider doing it if you sent your 21 in for a spa treatment for not much more than the spa treatment.
Just call and ask and explain your situation. If they are ok to do it,..put a note in the box requesting them to do this when you ship it off.

Thanks guys, swedge it is. Ill call them tomorrow and see what they say. Otherwise ill search the craftsmen section.

Were it mine, I'd just leave it and use it. It really doesn't affect anything. But I get that its the kind of thing that could bug a guy until he got it fixed.

Recommendation: make sure you're very clear about what you want. That's the best way to avoid misunderstandings.

Thanks guys.
Powernoodle, it is my main edc work knife and i use it a lot to punch through sheetrock to make a hole for a sawzall, now with a rounded tip it wont go through as easily. Otherwise id say screw it.

It still looks pretty pokey. You might try it on some sheetrock. Who knows - it might still be da bomb. I just think its cool that you are using the dang thing on the job like God intended.

I'd definitely call CRK tomorrow. Send them the same pics you posted on this thread. You might even want to ask them to let you know when they receive

your knife and Then send them your pics. Heather and Angelia are great people to deal with.

That sucks !

I too would be kicking myself. I've always wanted to try a CRK swedge but I thought that they'd stopped offering it-hopefully not though- as it'd fix yours right up.
As a Sheetrock or drywall puncher you'd lose a touch of strength with a thinner tip but it'd stab a bit easier which is a fair trade off.
Look at it this way. Your already unhappy about the mistake and are upset enough to get a new blade so even if you're unhappy with the swedge all you'll be out is the money you paid to have it ground. Since you're using an expensive knife as a drywall punch I'm "assuming" that those few extra bucks won't break the bank.

I hope that it works out for you and please let us all know what happens.

Mmmm I would say get a new blade. I've messed up blades before and had CRK replace them. Needless to say I don't try to do anything to my blades except sharpen them on my Edge Pro.

while I would like a swedge, I'd just use that as it is for a while and take time to think about what you want...and who has demonstrated to you that they have done, and can do what you would like.

As it is, I'm not seeing anything that should cause any problems in daily use/carry...so use it.
