need help selecting a revolver

I shoot both and really like the Taurus as well as the S&W. I like the full house loads in 357 but mostly shoot 38 wad cutters nowadays due to price. Buy a Taurus and you will not be disappointed. As some one noted dry fire is some of the best and cheapest practice you can find. A set of snap caps runs about 5.00.

If you don't already have a cleaning kit, consider a Boresnake. A pretty easy/simple way to clean the gun in the field, before you even put it in the case.

i picked up a Kleenbore cleaning kit when i bought the gun. it ran me $20.00 and the sales person said it was a good kit that included everything i would need. i'm not sure if this is similar to what you are talking about?

I still feel that a .22 revolver is about the best basic kit/trail pistol out there. Unless you're planning a gunfight, it will scare off any potential bad guys. It will take game of the type you're mostly likely to need in a survival situation, and it's inexpensive to shoot. I've had an old Taurus 94 in stainless steel with a 3" barrel for years. Holds nine rounds. It's accurate and inexpensive to shoot. You can pack two extra boxes (100 rounds) for probably less than a third the weight of a larger caliber plus it takes up less space in your pack.

That said, I often pack a .45 automatic.

I'm sure the Kleenbore will be great. Remember to periodically clean under the ejector star at the rear of the cylinder. Occasionally unburned powder granules and other stuff can get under it. If it becomes elevated enough it can make your cylinder hard to turn (or even jammed) when the cylinder is loaded.
