I've decided I want to give my modded Craftsman some more power and found some good priced motors at HF. I'd like to get this 2 hp model: http://www.harborfreight.com/2-horsepower-compressor-duty-motor-67842-8287.html

but it has open vents below the shaft. Could I cover that up to keep debris out, or should I opt for this 1 hp?

Either is a step up from the stock 1/3 hp and both will slow it down to an acceptable speed, especially with step pulleys, but only $10 extra would get so much more power.

You need TEFC, so the second motor would work better.

One problem with modding a tool and upgrading the power source by a factor of three to six is that the bearings and other parts may not be up to that degree of stress. If I was going to spend a hundred or more on a motor, I would build a GIB, EERF, etc. and have a good 2X72 capable of handling the load.

I put a baldor 1.5hp TEFC on my 2x42. It's a great value modification, although pyroceramic platen is nice too.

Scoured CL and ebay and saw some decent deals, but accounting for shipping they'd cost about the same as the new HF. Thanks for the input, now I just have to get some pulleys.
