Need help , shoulder screwed

Mark, the stuff I took had Glucosaine, Chondroitin and MSM as active ingredients. Taking it will most likely help. But only if you give your shoulder some time off for the healing. Baby it along for a few months while taking that stuff and it it doesn't get any better I'd throw in the towel and go see your doctor. I'm one of those that recommends chiropractic care but only when the Chiropractor isn't the type that thinks you need weekly follow-ups for a year following your initial treatment. The good ones can fix you in a few visits. Having a bad shoulder is about the same as having only one arm. Take care of that shoulder and it should recover.

I wish you the best and hope it comes back without anything major being done. The times I've screwed shoulders up its always been unrelated to forging. More like throwing it out with a baseball. Seems like there's a point in time where the mind is still a kid but the body goes a different direction. It got better after a number of visits to a chyropractor but throwing a ball is something I avoid now. I'd have to go with the press, I have neither a power hammer or a press but have been told I should before I end up hurting myself doing it by hand. Hand forging is the part I enjoy the most and I'm thinking your the sameway. You probably can't dance, neither can I.......... I think back to this time last year I had a strap on both my wrist and forarm and haven't used neither since last June. I was thinking alot about presses then.

It was really nice of billf to reply here, and it sounds like solid gold advice. I went to a $#**$$!* chiropractor for a little arthritis a while back, and because of him I spent 6 1/2 months on a hospital bed and in a wheelchair. Stay away from the bone cracker chiropractors!

A couple of notes,
I would recommend a press over a powerhammer, quieter, very controllable
for those times when you just want to give the piece a good whack, build a treadle hammer, you can also use the same tooling for a treadle hammer and a press.

and as for warming up, it is a good idea, starting out with a 3-4 lb hammer cold is asking for trouble. My warm up is to stretch while the forge heats up, or the fire builds, and then I spend 15-30 min making small hooks with a 500g hammer, it loosens up my arm, and I can still sell the "excersises"

OK, I'm certainly not a bladesmith, nor even a real knifemaker as yet, but what about doing stock removal knives for a while? I realize that to propose this is probably sacrelige, but it's an idea. All your finishing skills would still apply, just less pounding involved. You could still make beautiful knives, just different ones. It would probably be a little easier on your shoulder than building a trip hammer.

Just an idea.

"Stay away from the bone cracker chiropractors!"

Very true. I should mention that mine was very gentle - into tai chi and all that kind of stuff as well. He doesn't like the rough, make it "crack" approach of many chiros out there.

is, but I dont think I would what that to happen on a first date.
 :o :D Shame on you! :o :footinmou

hi all

I am sure the previous quote meant "bowel" (intestinal) bleeding, and this can occur with ANY non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine ( we call them NSAIDS) including Ibuprofen. Aspirin is one of the most likely to do this, newer meds like Vioxx and Celebrex are less likely. The bleeding can be from the stomach (gastric) or from the intestine, and it can be significant, so just "pounding Advil" for a period of time is not without risk. Also, NEVER take these meds if you take Plavix or Coumadin unless you specifically check with your doctor. Even garlic and Vitamin E along with some herbal supplements can increase your chance of bleeding.

As far as chiropractors, as an orthopedist I work with them as well as with physical therapists frequently. For a shoulder injury,( not involving the cervical nerve roots) there is no reason to "crack" anything, and in fact that would be a BAD idea. Gentle mobilization, massage and stretching, combined with strengthening is a GOOD idea, whether done with a chiropractor or therapist. Hope this helps!

Thanks to everyone for all the well wishes and good advice. I'm definately going to take it easy for a while. I'm thinking right now a treadle hammer and a press would be the ticket. My little shop keeps getting smaller and smaller :grumpy:

I really love the hand forging and hope to be able to do it till I croak. I guess it's better to be able to forge with equipment than not at all.

Now Im not sure what "Bowl bleeding" is, but I dont think I would what that to happen on a first date.
Bowel bleeding,no thanks! Yes, that stuff is hard on your liver and your body, for sure. Because of my day job, I am limited to what I take, which is prescribed Nabumetone. It helps with the pain and swelling. The chiro took Xrays before he did his deed, too. It was his first "adjustment"appointment, and his last. Anyhow, as the gentlemen suggested earlier, some lighter duty making and careful stretching beforehand may help. Heal soon, friend!

Not to dredge up an old thread, but I just "discovered" this stuff, and thought I would share. Mark, Max, Billf... the Flexamin is really working well for me. I've been only taking one a day (I'm cheap), but the effects are pronounced. Then, a friend's wife is sick with the flu and while trying to find him a link to my favorite vitamin-C brand, I stumbled across this:

http://www.alacer.com/cgi-bin/dbsea...DBCOMP=ABS,template=/products/returntitle.htm

As a side note, I've been taking the regular Emergen-C every winter and never had a bout of the flu... or a flu shot, in over 15 years now. I think I'll be taking this stuff when I run out of Flexamin.
