Hi everyone,
I'm very new to Busse knifes and very interested in buying my first one. I did some research but still unsure what to get and need an advise from somebody who own and use Busse knifes in real life. I'm looking for a knife that I will be actually using for hunting and camping. I'm leaning towards Steel Heart, satin finish (however it looks like it's more money than coated blades, why?), convex (I hope i can learn how to sharpen convex), 6"-8" straight (no curves) blade. My second choice so far would be NMSFNO.
I'm a bit confused with the number of existing versions for NO and SH and would appreciate you opinion on models, coating, length, handle material, etc.
Thank you.

These are a good choice for a first blade. In my opinion I would also get a boss street, I think it is one of the best hunting knifes out there. I might get it first as there are many around at good prices and it has the option of EDC and would be better for the hunting side of your want's, then grab an ash or sfno or nmsfno as a your large blade to handle the camping side of your needs. this set would cover you for life, but you'll never get enough. I will light a candle for you!

The basic 6 would be a perfect knife, but you just missed out on it.

I would think the CABS would make a great hunting knife too.

Combining camping and hunting causes a compromise to be made if going for "one knife" ... for chopping you need something in the 8 inch range if you want good chopping ability ... but then working inside a carcass is'nt easy with a deep blade ... the choices you are thinking of are good but a slimmer blade such as the SAR 8 would be my personal choice or a Basic 9 but the Basic 9 is hard to find. So the SAR 8 seems the best choice to me.

As Biggerdawg said the Boss Streets is very hard to beat and you can get a combat grade is very reasonably priced. It's a great hunting / camping blade.

For a hunting knife I would go with a shorter blade, like the cabs or sar3.

For a bigger knife the NMSFNO is a great blade, I personally dont have one yet, but its on my short list. SarSquatch or DSF would be a more economical option for great INFI blades

The satin blades are more expensive because they are more labor intensive than the coated knives. With powder coating you can hang 200 knives and spray them all at once, one man for 200 finishes. With satin every knife has to be hand finished and has to look good to boot. That's 200 tasks vs. 1.

This list goes from heavy chopper to lighter agile (I'm sure I'm missing some)

HOGFSH
FSH
NMSFNO
SAR8
sarsquatch
SFNO
DSF
BOSS jack proto
BOSS jack cg
BOSS jack le
Basic 7
Basic 6

and then into the smaller sizes.

The most important question before choosing or getting advice is this: what do you plan on doing with it, and are you going to be carrying other knives?

-If you intend on carrying a smaller knife like a CABS, the HOGFSH is awesome, one of the best medium length choppers I've ever handled. But it's heavy.
-If you intend on carrying only 1 knife and don't want to carry anything else, either the DSF or BOSS jack proto. You'll get a similar amount of edge if you get the choiless version, but both are slim and agile for what they can accomplish. However, they aren't going to be the best at felling tree's.
-If you care about weight, the basic 7 or the new (and cheaper) basic 6 are awesome. I'd go with the basic 7 because it's got a smaller choil, but it's hard to get and expensive.
-If you are going to carry a really small knife like a leatherman and want something that leans more towards chopping but is still smallish - the SAR8 or SFNO are excellent choices.

The options change drastically with what you want the knife to do, what other knives you'll be carrying, and how important weight is.

If you don't have any INFI yet, your first two choices are really good considering you don't have any yet so you must have done your homework. But considering prices and what you what, you might what to get the Basic 6 LE at that fantisic price or you will regret that later. That's something that you just can't beat! That is only avil for ten days, in satin, limited edition... You just can't beat that!
But whatever you choose, if it's a Busse, you can't go wrong no matter what you choose!

There a so many choices these days, almost makes me miss the days when there were four. :)

I would think the CABS would make a great hunting knife too.

Pretty sure that TODAY (8-11-11) is the LAST DAY the Basic 6 LE can be ordered. :)

I like to have two knives: one for small and precise work and a bigger one for harder work (but versatile not for chopping only)

I would suggest posting your general location and see if there are any Busse enthusiast near you so that you may handle a few prior to purchasing.

Like everyone else said, I would get a Basic 6, if you still can. If not, these are my favorite mid-sized Busses:
1. Skinny ASH (mine is .22" thick, so more mid-sized than skinny)
2. SFNO LE
3. NMSFNO

The Boss Jack is also pretty great, but I personally prefer a blade with more belly in that size range, hence the ASH being in the top three and not the BJ. As far as sharpening convex, there are plenty of great tutorials on the web. I still am horrible at it, so for now I'm keeping most of my blades with a V-edge. When I get better at it, I'll most likely convex my keepers.

The SFNO LE is the best feeling blade I've held/owned. The ASH is not far behind due to the fact that it has incredible balance, feels great in hand and has a great blade shape, and the NMSFNO is a jack of all trades. If you get an NMSFNO or SFNO LE, I'd recommend getting a smaller, 3.5"-4" blade to accompany it. Maybe a MUK, Boss Street, CABS or Swamp Rat Rodent Solution (all of these blades are pretty awesome.) The Skinny ASH would be great for your purposes, IMO. Keep a watch out on the exchange as there may just be a couple of these blades coming available some time soon. Best of luck in your searches, and welcome to the chaos!

To order the B6, follow the instructions in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/868391-Basic-6-LE-GanzaaaaaaaRammmmaaaaaaa.-.-.-.-.-.-This-Thursday-7-28-2011

Or like Rob Stanley said, give them a ring. I am pretty sure the 10 days are up, but it's definitely worth a shot. I personally prefer Micarta on medium sized fixed blades and Res-C on choppers, but I have no doubt that the B6 will be an excellent knife. Plus you get the bonus of it being light, satin, and with a convex zero edge.
