Hi Guys,

I'm having a hard time trying to find the following contact wheels:

14" X 2" un-serrated 70-80 duro rubber, only one I found was $415... I was hoping for a little less pricey.

8" X 2" 90-110 duro rubber contact wheel for my surface grinder.

If you guys have a lead or know someone that refinished wheels let me know please, I would really appreciate it.

Contact grinder? Is this something other than what we usually refer to as a "belt grinder" around here?

The Beaumont 14" wheel is the primary source that I'm aware of, and yes, it's expensive. I've always assumed they're made by Contact Rubber Corp.

Most of the poly wheels are made by Sun Ray Inc. Who will be happy to make whatever wheels you want at whatever durometer, but getting a single wheel is even more expensive than what you're hoping not to pay above.

Why do you need specifically a 90-110 8" wheel? That's very hard, assuming you mean 90-100, as I don't think the scale goes above 100.

Only application I'm aware of where you want a wheel that hard is for a surface grinder conversion. When hand grinding, that high hardness is going to add to a ton of chatter and finish inconsistencies.

Sorry mistyped, the 8" is for my converted surface grinder. You want a harder duro for that application.

I had my wheel for my SG conversion made by Contact Rubber Corp. It wasn't exactly "cheap", but it was well worth the price. FWIW, you should be able to get away with a smaller diameter wheel, like say a 6" vs. 8", and save a little bit of money. Shouldn't make a bit of difference as far as the machine is concerned.

As for the 14" wheel, you're probably not going to find it too much cheaper. CRC may be a little cheaper than Beaumont, though it probably won't be much.

Yeah, like many here, I have a SG with a contact wheel, one of 3 surface grinders in my shop.

If you don't have a fairly large SG, i.e. one that runs 12" wheels standard or bigger, you may find your machine doesn't have the ass to back up an 8x2" wheel. Many people use 1" wide wheels on their SG, if you are going to use a 2" wide wheel on a small 6x12 SG or similar, you may want to consider using a 6" wheel.

Most people I know have Sunray or Contact Rubber make them, they'll run you about $250 as I recall.

Now if you've got a real big surface grinder that can handle a large wheel, I've considered taking a grizzly 10" contact wheel and turning out the center to accommodate the SG hub.

Regardless, for this wheel, and the 14" wheel, there ain't a lot of options. You either pony up the cash for what the listed suppliers want, or wait around for a used one to pop up, which is rare, and usually not at much of a discount.

Thanks guys,
I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss a source. I have a serrated 8" on my sg now, and a 10" for my grinder. I'm just trying to get some different options for upgrades. Thanks again

Bader makes a 2x8 contact wheel in 90 durometer and Beaumont's 14 inch wheel at $415 is expensive but many think it's worth it. I have a 14 inch Beaumont wheel and rarely use it. My favorite is the 8 inch followed by the 10 and then the 6 inch. You can get a Bader 5 x 2 1/2 90 duro wheel for surface grinding which is what I use on my Travis Wuertz surface grinding attachment. It is supposed to be reasonably priced but I don't know the exact cost. Larry

Yeah I bought a 14" wheel from Beaumont also, thinking I might one day need it, and rarely use it except for cutting swooped swedges. I'm thinking that if you don't already hollow grind big knives, it's probably not a rational investment. Yet, it's kind of a buy once, cry once, situation. I could sell mine, but then I'd find a use for it.

I might be a bit cheap (economical!), but I buy my contact wheels from China. The ones I've bought so far has been balanced enough. I could chose my preferred ID and hardness (35-100 durometer). They shipped very fast.

136 USD incl shipping for a 14 inch non-serrated.

Yeah that's a significant savings, can you get them with bearings already, or are you on your own for that?

I custom order them with correct ID for a press fit. Bearings are cheap. I have a 12 ton workshop for pressing. Works fine.

Interesting.... And they seem to be of decent enough balance and quality? I've been wanting to try a solid wheel for my surface grinder, and I may just give them a shot...

Well, I'm no expert in the matter. But the wheels I've bought doesn't seem to be out of balance, based on wobbling at least.

I'd definitely give it a try, they're very helpful.
