Need help with an expendable beater

I have very specific tastes in EDCs. Most of what I have is something special, limited edition or discontinued. I'm going to have to do a bit of traveling and as you would imagine from my posting on this site, I'm not going empty handed. The thing is, I do not want to risk TSA confiscation of one of my hard to replace folders.

BM 960red D2 - Discontinued
Spyderco Calypso ZDP-189 - Sprint run, 1500 pieces
Ritter RSK Griptilian M2 - Limited edition, probably will not be able to replace it after I get it.
Spyderco Cricket - A little small, would prefer about twice as big
Buck Oddessy - Was my beater but now its been discontinued by buck and Id really hate to lose it for sentimental reasons.
Gerber Covert - Not my cup of tea anymore, probably going to sell it.
Surefire Alpha - Could not warm up to the S30V or the chisel grind, probably going to sell it.

The rest are fixed blades that I dont even want to attempt to take.

So I need to pick a new folder to buy before my trips. I had contemplated a spyderco salt of some sort in H1 since I could literally take it anywhere thanks to its ruggedness. I'm not sure I want to give up the edge for the ruggedness. I also thought about the BM710 in D2. I'm open to anything as long as it meets my few requirements.

No serrations unless its one of the SALT line.
Around $120 or less.
Prefer tool steel ala D2, M2, O1, BG42 etc.

What say you?

It's not a tool steel, but the ultimate beater knife is the D`allara drop point. It's built, it's cheap, it has VG10. 55 bucks.

I see you will be getting a Ritter Grip in M2. Why not a D2 Griptilian from Cabela's? Or even a regular Grip? Superb knife, easily replacable and easy on the wallet.

edit: or a mini D2 cabela's grip if you need something smaller, but still bigger than a cricket

Assuming the 2 benchmades were the same price, which to go for? Some sort of rubber or G10?

Try the BM monochrome. Excellent beater and at a cost of around $40 the N690 steel (similar to 440C) it's an excellent value at any price.:D

I think your definition of "expendable" is different than mine. If I had serious concerns that my pocketknife was going to be confiscated or lost, I'd be shopping in the < $20 range. Swiss Army Knife, Opinel, etc.

Enjoy your travels!

It boils down to the fact that my company will replace it if it is consumed during my travels. They will give me blue book for what its worth. Thats fine for most things but the things that are not in circulation anymore are not worth it.

Its like having an original shelby cobra 427 stolen and the insurance company giving you $8k because thats what the car originally sold for.

Ill check out the monochrome.

The D2 Griptilian is probably the most popular knife in this class amongst those in this forum. There's also the Ka-Bar D2 Dozier Folder which can be gotten cheap. But, I gotta agree with the D`allara drop point.

The Monochrome is a great candidate for a "beater." I'm a little sad that I sold mine a while ago. Only major disadvantage I see compared to the D'Allara is the lack of ambidextrousness. The Monochrome is slimmer too, making it more compact for travel.

$120 knife that you wont mind getting taken by TSA!? You must have a much fatter wallet then me. :)

I've been carrying the BM Mini-Pika recently. 440C (Which I really enjoy), 3" blade, not too scary looking, deep pocket clip to stay discreet. The best part- $21.95 at gpknives.com.

I dont think it can be beat for an "expendable" knife.

camillus cuda edc (under 30$, real beater :)), spyderco mini manix, benchmade 720/721

IMO, you should use one of the ones you have, like the M2 griptillian. It's not going to increase much in price for another 20 years, and the M2 steel was made to be used because it's tough. Don't be shy!
When you're ready to replace it, BM will have made another nice knife that I'm sure you will like.

Spyderco Endura 4.

Nice improvements, good steel, and easily replaced for under $50.

What good would it do me to throw it in my suitcase and have TSA snatch it before I even got to use it? Then I cant even replace it.

All Im looking for are nice knives that arent special editions so that if they are stolen or taken by TSA my company can replace them. I do not usually carry anything under $50, not because I'm a knife snob, I just like higher quality.

Chances are I'll keep this knife a long time so I'm looking for something with a little better fit and finish than $20 knives. I'm not opposed to paying so little but I'm not trying to squeeze blood from a turnip and get a sebenza for $29.99.

Spyderco Blue Alemite Walker? VG-10, 2.75ish inc blade (depending on who measures).

I've got one and really like it. They can be found for about $65 online.

I also really like the Benchmade 710 and 705, depending on what size you're looking for.

Spyderco Pacific Salt.

Light-weight, virtually maintenance free except sharpening the blade, and the blade is easy to sharpen too.

Good luck,
Allen.

i have a kabar warthog i got for 35 dollars and have to say it holds up well.my other choice would be a discontinued crkt mirage if you can find one
