Need help with Damascus Jewelry Steel choices

Whatever the mix, it will be cycled above well 2000F in forging and manipulation. That should take care of any transitions needed to attain maximum corrosion resistance. I haven't used any mixes that were not hardenable, so someone else would have to answer that question.

304/420 should be hardenable unless the 304 ratio is high.
From what I have read, the subject of stainless alloying is pretty complex. Since I don't machine things, I never delved too deeply into it. There are whole books on the subject of picking stainless steels for a task and the metallurgy of stainless steel.

Unfortunately, the book on making and working stainless damascus is a fairly thin one.
