Troy,
Based on Information in Fuller and Gregory's "Military Swords of Japan", ythis looks to be an Army issue Junior Officers Parade Sabre, circa 1877. This is based on the handle configuration and markings as well as the grip being made of Horn (at least it looks to be). The blade is a machine made arsenal blade with an etched hamon.

It looks to be in pretty good condition. You might be able to find the end cap on
e-bay. If not than probably through someone who is focused on Japanese Militaria, as opposed to someone who collects traditional nihonto.

Thank you Kevin.
That's great news!
I sure appreciate the information. It gives me a good starting point to dig deeper.
I've been thinking of listing it but, couldn't find any info on it.
Any idea of the value?

I'm not really sure on the price range for this one. Missing the pommel nut will cut into it's potential. Do you have the original scabbard? I think I saw one that was simila on flea-bay for around $400. I was in good condition with all of the parts. You might want to check there for a gague. Also, the website flagged by SShepaerd is a great site. Much to learn from the members on that board.
