I have found a new Lum Tanto fixed blade knife at a B&M store and I need some more information about this knife before I decide whether I should buy it.

-First, how many were made and how popular were they at the time;

-Second, how come they are rarely seen for sale in forums?

-Third, should I pay the 200$ the owner wants for it? I saw one on eBay that sold for over 250$ last month, and right now there is another one that has reached 150$ with a couple of days to go before the auction ends.

So, should I pull the trigger on this one, I sure like it but I do not want to overpay?

First, too many and not enough. ;) Too many to sell all at once and not enough to stock all the dealers forever. They were discontinued for the usual reason, slow sales.

Second, because the people that have them want to keep them. The fact that Bob Lum passed away last year could be a factor there.

Third, $200 sounds like a fair price. I don't think I've seen one go for less than that in the last couple of years. I seem to recall them being pretty pricey when they were in production, which probably contributed to the slow sales. It was a pretty high-end production piece.

Buy it.

If you don't like it, post it up here for trade or sale. People will jump over themselves for it. Not many of those were made, and they are lovely knives. :)

Hmm never seen one. If you do buy it, post up a pic please.

This is the one in AUS-8, but I believe there were a couple in VG-10.

:D

So, anybody knows more about those made in VG-10? Was it a sprint run or something?

I'm thinking it was just an upgrade. During the time when VG10 was put into many other models.

Thats funny i saw one recently at a b&m for the same price
and i was wondering the same thing, i was going to buy it but
i just couldnt see myself spending $200 on somthing that would
most likely end up sitting in a drawer.
but that doesnt mean i still dont want it:D

It is one of the finest looking American tanto style knives I've seen.

yup! a fine representation of Lum's uniquely ageless design.
also by chance, i noticed that the collector's numbered version had a better fit 'n finish when compared to the standard production...

IMHO $200 for fixed Lum Tanto is fair price, not "steal", not "find", but fair price.
By the way, that one, which currently on e-bay, doesn't have a box. If you get in a store, there is much better chance to get really NIB.
Good luck

Thanks to all for your valuable input. I think I'll go get it by the end of the week.

If you like it, want it, and can afford it, I say go for it. You are unlikely to see one at a lower price.
QFT.

I have one of the Lum fixed tanto knives that I bought when they were actually in production, but I waited on getting one of the Lum tanto folders and have regretted it ever since. :(

Pretty hard to believe as the collector's numbered version only differs in "standard production" via one extra step to engrave the collector's number.

Retired? Any plans to come out of retirement?

Got it, and it is numbered!
