Need help with Manix

I need your Spyderco expertise please.

I just bought a Manix and it seems like a decent knife, but it is VERY stiff to open. I tried some oil in the pivot area, but it didn't help much.

My Benchmades, with axis locks, are incredibly smooth so maybe I am a little spoiled.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I also need to move the clip - anybody know the size of the star bit - the ones that I have are too large.

Thanks.

My first guess without seeing the knife would be the pivot screw may have been tightened too much. This is often done to get one through an inspection (such as Customs) where they call anything they can easily inertia open a "gravity knife".

As for clip screws, my Manix has Phillips head screws, but my Mini-Manix are T8. Good luck.

Out of the box, Axis locks, Ball-bearing locks, and all variations of liner locks are going to be more "smooth" opening than the venerable family of back locks. Back locks usually require a bit of a break-in period and/or the pivot is just a bit tight as Yablanowitz mentioned.

If your screws aren't philips, then they are usually torx heads not star heads...(I believe there is a differenct between torx and star??)

Thanks for the info guys.

Yep, you are correct - it is a torx, and very small.

thanks

I have both, and the 95 is a little stiffer than the 83 out of the box. With the blade open, holding the knife spine up, when I release the lock, the 83 blade will fall with just the right amount of friction, but the 95 blade doesn't fall without shaking it.

For both models the pivot screws are T8, but my slightly used T9 wrench seems to squeeze in as well.

My problem is I tried to adjust the 95 but couldn't get the pivot screw to loosen, that is, the screw on the opposite side turns with it. I've tried sticking torx wrenches on both sides in an attempt to work it free but they feel welded together.

Opening and closing a number of times seems to improve it slightly but nothing would beat being able to actually work the screws free:confused:

I'm a newbie to Spyderco knives, but I would guess that they used loc-tite or something similar on those pivot screws. There are different varieties of Loc-Tite ranging from fairly easy to break loose to next to impossible. It's probably not the next to impossible stuff. A little heat may help. . . A soldering iron applied to the screw on one side or the other for a few moments might do the trick. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be careful not to put it on there for too long so you don't melt anything, but I just did in a round about way anyhow, just in case. ;)

As any lockback it probably needs just to be opened and closed couple hundred times :)

Salamander42, lol, thanks for the tip.

huugh, you're probably right. The surfaces between the lock and the blade also need to be broken in maybe, a bit of oil here and there certainly helped me.

I don't have any real gripes about the opening and closing, the slight stiffness doesn't affect normal use, I could still flick it open consistently after a bit of practice.

Just found it odd I couldn't adjust the pivot on the 95, where the 83 can be easily adjusted. Nevertheless for me, it doesn't take away any points from an excellent knife.

mine was very stiff out of box. it has worked itself into a smooth opener now, after many openings and light use. just give it a little time, and use it!
