hey guys,

I bought some nelsonite from Ellis. I need some help on how to stabilize some scales and blocks. Can you treat more than one kind of wood at a time? Can you stain the wood after you treat with nelsonite? I can vacuum seal the jar that I put the wood in.

Any information you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

My advice is leave it to the pro's. I bought some Nelsonite about two years ago and tried to stabilize some wood and horn. I pulled a vaccuum on a sealed jar for days until the bubbles stopped coming out of the wood. Let it sit outside to dry and two years later that piece of wood still stinks. I don't know if I missed a step but it smells so bad I would never put it on a blade. The wood I've sent to WSSI doesn't look or smell anything like the piece I tried to stabilized. The money spent was well worth it to get it done right.
Since you've got the stuff already give it a go, hopefully you'll have better luck than me.

Just my 2 cents worth, but "stabilizing" with Nelsonite and stabilizing with the proper resins are very different things.
Nelsonite has its uses in woodworking and making pool cues, but I don't like it for knife work. The odor never seems to completely go away, either.
Getting it done professionally, by WSSI in my case, is money well spent. I recommend them to anyone who has quality wood and wants it to become high quality knife handles.
