Hello there people of bladeforums im looking for some help with the heat treating process. Now i've done my homework so im not in the full blue  ive spent hours reading metallurgy text, sections in the machinery handbook, Wayne Goddards 50 knife shop, YouTube videos & internet searches ect. so i know the different steps involved, but can anybody give me a list of what comes first, then second, ect? Is it shaping and forging, quenching, then annealing and grinding, then tempering and final finish? do i have the general idea? i understand the whole working hardness deal and quenching hardens tempering softens. i think. haha. thanks for any advice!! :)

I don't forge but I will give you a run down on stock removal process outline for heat treating.

1) cut out
2) profile the shape
3) pre-heat treat grind
4) Thermal Cycle to reduce stresses and grain size ( you will hear a lot of different things about this )
5) Heat treat
6) Quench
7) Temper
8) Clean up
9) Final grinding
10) Hand sanding
11) Handling
12) post pictures to the internet

Since I don't forge it is really hard to believe what I say about that. but

If you forge, you would forge, anneal, then start your profiling and grinding and follow the same steps from there.
